Hello all!! I am new to this forum. My name is Shamsul Hasan,I live in Karachi Pakistan. I am banker by profession. I am sixty years old. Boating is my hobby and have owned different boats for the last 25 years.
I recently bought a 1987 Trojan 12 meter International as a project boat. The boat has been completely stripped. I am re-wiring the boat,re-building the engines etc etc. This boat has a balsa cored hull. The boat has been in water for the last 15 years only taken out to clean the bottom and paint. Its now on land for over a month as I am working on it. The hull has dried completely,no blisters, pin holes or osmosis. I was not sure of the state of balsa core so i drilled 14 holes from the inside 7 on each side of the hull bottom. I found no water, balsa was not black but slightly moist. Only one hole on the port side of the engine room balsa was a bit wet but still not dis-colored. Do I need to remove balsa or wait for it to dry with some more holes?? we have a hot climate. I am attaching a picture which may help.
    Thanks and Regards
    Shams

A wet balsa core frequently does rot and it takes months for it to dry. Avoid doing any work that will prevent you from removing the skin and recoring it until you are sure the core is dry and has no bad spots.

Thanks!! Should I drill a few more holes for it to dry on its own?? Its not rotten yet. There is a possibility I can save the core. This project will take a while for me to complete. I can live with not doing any work that will prevent me to peel off the skin and re-core it.

I'm sorry I don't have experience with drying cores in place to advise you on the best way to accomplish this in place.
