Make up a name from the past as it was built so long ago, and no one will remember.

    That is really bad advice.

    Miller88 says this,
"I have been in touch with my insurer and they will not insure the boat without a name of builder even if it is a home built boat they need the name of the person who built it so has me stumped on how to go about it"
Home-built so any name will do, it is fill in a blank paperwork only. Anyone can build a boat. And he seems to be saying there is no way forward without a name put on the paper, so it can be anyname to fill in the blank. All they want is some characters to put on a form. If when he bought the boat, he was told John Baker built this in 1966, then go with that. Does not make it accurate, just what he was told and that is all they want.

Unless he has concerns about third party liability, it is not worth insuring.

This isn't about stolen property protection, it's about dealing with an insurance company who can make claims of frauds or at least a lack of pertinent information when/if a settlement needs to be paid out. If, at the time of a settlement, it becomes believed that the owner didn't provide accurate information that might inform the insurance company of the risks, they won't pay up. It doesn't matter what country you're in, this is business.

Miller, can you post some photos of the interior of the boat please, including (and especially) the bilges?
It would be interesting to see what sort of condition the bilges are in - steel boats invariably 'rust out' from the inside, even if they appear to be pristine on the outside.

Yeh I will take some photos of inside and the bilge area for you when i get a chance.
The bilge is quiet well kept surprisingly there is some rust on the engine mount frame but the actual hull is in good condition.
I appreciate all the input and all of the coments but and i have taken some advice as to the age of the boat and weather it is really worth spending large amounts of money on a old boat like this when i could go buy something done for less.
So this boat will be staying as it was built and just having a birthday and being used as a fishing boat.
I will either rebuild the 170ci ford 6 in it or put one of 2 deisel engines i have laying around into it one being a zb t4100 or a 2.0 hdi
