Plastic Sheets and Wooden Frames

Hello All.

Sure some will roast me for this, but here goes:

I am in the wine industry and love to build boats, etc in my spare time. One of the many wastes in our industry is Oak Staves, used inside red wine tanks and broken plastic pallet diver boards (1,2m x 1,2m).

I have re-used the old oak staves many a times with great success and the red tint to them looks awesome when varnished.

So the discarded pallet divider boards got me thinking. I am building a flat 13ft skiff of my own design and thought I might experiment with the following:

Wooden frames with 3mm thickness plastic pallet divider panels instead of 4mm marine ply. Have any one done this?

I have done with a rectangle wood frame with the panel epoxied on and seems to be rock solid. For extra measure I will roughen the plastic on the outside of the hull and glass over it with 4)z Fibre glass.

What is your thoughts?

 

What kind of plastic is it?

 

Probably polypropylene.

 

Not a fan because the likely plastic won't likely stick well.

Use the stuff for some ecletic portion of the boat where you aren't redesigning the wheel where the oak can be seen for the color and the plastic can do something plastic is good for....like well, who needs plastic?
