New Member rebuilds a Coronado 15

Hey, I have spent a little time rebuilding this small boat. It will be used as a first boat for my nieces and nephews. No serious racing.

I'd like to post a few cool pictures. Have not done this for awhile, but will getup to speed quickly.

 

I decided to cut the deck off.

The hatch was way to small.

 

I'd save the deck for awhile, you might have to put it back on for strength or something. That's a nice boat, it looks quick and nimble.

 

The deck was reattached with a few tubes of fast cure 5200. Just to be safe, I will add 4 SS bolts to the seam, around the fore stay, and along side the cut.

I will get a few days to work on the boat this weekend, and I will post a few pics. Hopefully, I will get it out for a sail.

 

I spent a few days with the boat, but spent much time at the DMV, trying to get the trailer registered. If I can get the most recent registration from the previous owner, then all should go well.

Here are a few pictures of the boat. Keep in mind, this is a 'first effort' with boat repair and, I learned a few lessons the hard way.

Here is a shot of the bulkhead. It is 3/4" pressure treated plywood (expensive stuff.) It is not 'Marine Grade.'

Actually, I am thinking of cutting away some of the bulkhead; It is a bit over built.

Access to this side of the bulkhead was limited, to say the least. I did the best fiberglass work that a guy can do whilst twisted up like a pretzel. The forward side looks 10 times better (advantage of cutting the deck off.)

 

Now that I think of it. I wish I had a pressure washer, when the hull was open, it would have done a good job of cleaning the inside surfaces of that dusty old hull.

Here is a shot of the top of the bulkhead.

The tabbing is light at the underside of the deck, but at the hull, it is two layers of 6" tape. The bulkhead is set in thickened epoxy with fillets.

Not shown in this picture is a 3/4 inch board that is screwed and epoxied along the forward top of the bulkhead. This forms the support for the seam in the deck, where the deck was sawed off the boat. (yes, I would saw it off again if given the chance.)

 

Here is a look at the bow.

I want to put two S.S. bolts on each side of the fore stay, to distribute the tension, but I am not sure how to bed the bolts.

The other picture, shows the underside of the flange. You can see the 5200.

bulkhead template?

Hi Canracer,
I know this thread is old and you don't even have this boat anymore. Unfortunately, that makes me late to the party. I bought a C-15 this last summer. She needs some work. I need to replace the bulkhead this winter as it appears to have sheared away at the hull, and there is a great deal of flex in the boat. I think I saw somewhere that you had downloaded the template for this job from the c-15 org site. Sadly I've been all over that site and don't see where I can download that template. Most discussions of this boat seem extremely old and dated. Any Chance you still have that template file somewhere? I love what you did with your little boat, you put a ton of work into her. The work you did on the compression post and everything below the floor, is super fancy looking considering it's sealed in there pretty good and nobody will see it. Nice job!

I still own the boat. Lots of work and energy went into it. I know it's not perfect, but maybe someone will be able to see what I did, and then improve on it.

I have those template files right here on my desktop.

I don't know why I thought you'd already sold her. My first step is to get enough room in the garage to get her in there. But I'm sure I'm gonna have plenty of questions. Glad to know there's some support out there.

Canracer, I also bought an old Coranado that needs some work. The compression post is completely rotten and needs replacing. I see you have replaced a lot of the wood supporting the hull and around the centerboard post. I assume I will have to do the same. In your experience what is the best way to get access to these areas (I see you cut off the foredeck earlier but from what I can tell you repaired that some time ago).

as I put together my shopping list, what tape/cloth should I be looking at to do this bulkhead job? I'm new to all of this so a little unsure. Looking at using duckypoxy..
