Need some help

    I have a 35yr old clinker built orkney long liner and this yr she needs a bit more tlc but im not sure how to sort the problem. She needs the complete plank in bottom replacing 2 planks up from the keel. Hopefully some one has a bit of advice thanks

    Welcome to the forum.

    Lapstrakes aren't hard to repair, but the work is different so most are intimidated by them. Once you get your head around the requirements, it goes pretty easily.

    We'll need a bit more information about your lapped puppy and some photos, to see where you stand. The garboards and broadstrakes are under the most stress (especially the garboards) so it's common to have to replace these. Once planking gets old (like a 1/3rd of century) it usually is cheaper to just replace it. Sometimes refastening will get you a few more seasons, but it's a downward spiral and she'll just leak more and more until you put some new planks on her. Lastly, if you've been tolerating leaks for a number of years, you probably have other issues, such as rotten fasteners, "egged out" fastener holes, cracked frames, etc., all of which need to be addressed or the new planking will leak too, because the structure will be weak and wobbly.
