Someone was asking which metal tube and shaft to use on a rudder, both in this (my boat) are grp manufactured by a Brisbane fishing and other tube sizes maker... there are also neoprene bushes which are sacrificial positional adjustments to give the underside clearance for the rudder to make about 35 degrees turn either way from straight... and the other keeps the floating rudder structure positioned where I want and the rudder is connected by a Stainless Steel of dubious quality .cn manufacture... The tube and rudder shaft are a close fit and allow the rudder to rotate easily with or without water lubrication... There are no bearings, only vertical adjustment using the bushes... This is the same manufacturer who made the stanchions and they were well tested the other day and one bent to about 90 degrees when severely loaded (around 1000kg or more) to spring back with no visible sign of damage or even paint creasing or whatever....

IMG0920 and IMG0921 are not rotated as the system in BD.net, then demands that I reduce the size... :D :p

Divide and conquer? - - - 3435 candidates vie for 109 seats http://www.postcourier.com.pg/20120529/news01.htm - Anyone who knows the "Melanesian Way" will understand this, - - - there are more than 600 different languages in PNG and I guess the larger clans have all fielded a parliamentary candidate... The outcome of this election will be interesting... http://www.postcourier.com.pg/

This may have been what was referred to http://www.boatdesign.net/forums/al...red-natural-disaster-42924-18.html#post557787 in another thread... http://www.dailypost.vu/content/murdered-couple-finally-rested-port-vila-cemetery - - - very sad to see such devastating troubles in paradise...

Well, time and opportunity for an update, On the hard at Monteys, propellers removed for coating with "Prop-speed" - which gives an oily finish... How effective at repelling barnacles remains to be seen and tested...

Fuel tanks is another problem - Turtle Packs seem robust, well designed and with a high quality reputation, but infortunately beyond my budget at more than $2000 for some 1000 litres capacity in 2 tanks... Oh well, looks like more 20 litre fuel drums...

Next issue is a new "notebook" and the difficulty in finding a matte screen so I can use it out in the open, (under a tree adjacent to a 5 star resort that has free internet access to 'guests'), The toshiba Satellite Pro is useless as I cannot load linux from the CD drive as the bios does not allow booting from CD/DVD, - only:- USB, HDD, network and something else for network administrators, so, how can I affirm that it will actually run linux? WTF now? and Windows 7 is soooo unfriendly as far as tweaking and personalising and untuitive interfaces - all useful stuff seems to be buried under 5 or more layers of menu options... Arrrgggh what a load of s41t..... Give me a decent piece of AMD based hardware and linux mint for international useability... The Toshiba is going BACK...

Here is a recent pic of CNO waiting for further developments

Voting is in progress in PNG - the process takes weeks as many places are accessed by long walks - really rugged country and beautiful scenery in the mountains and along the coast. . . . I prefer the coastal regions. . . especially the more remote islands...

Bolubolu has a certain appeal as a subregional centre on Goodenough Island, Milne Bay, PNG - - with a possibly abandoned estate to the SE at -9.388768 deg S and 150.382253 deg E - - if one seeks remote isolation yet "escape" via nearby Vivigani airfield...

This region has many hot springs and excellent diving to view the coral... Begs the question - Develop for spar and diving centre as an exclusive - minimal-impact, eco-cultural, sustainable-lifestyle remote-hideaway resort?

Propellers are sorted, prop-speed applied, so to find the bushes, (or do they serve as some part of the thrust bearing system? as they go between the back of the propeller and the bevel in the shaft... Do a careful clean of the lower shaft, pack clean grease and fit the propellers...

Turtle Pack fuel containers are not appropriate as the space requires a specially fitted expensive option so it looks like 20Litre drums/plastic jerry cans at around Au$22 each for some 25 items - need to get a bulk discount delivered price...

I may lower one berth, as I am running short on money and seek to go asap, if a weather window looks likely - early spring?

I still have to change the oil in the engines and sail-drive legs, - - Check the wiring of the PV panels (ensure there is no corrosion in the joins sort of stuff), - - Check the plumbing for the fresh water tanks, - - fill up the water tanks and fuel tanks, - - stow all the stuff ready to go...

    Mas,

When you do connection joints (try to avoid them anyhow), simply make an in line twisted wire joint, smother the bare wires with Lanoline grease, then heat skrink with the excellent Jaycar heat shrink that is 4:1 and includes glue too.

You will not have any dry or corroded joints if done correctly EVER...as in 50 years of protection, and that will probably see you out anyhow.

    Hi Landie,
Well - - You never know ??? :D It is tinned wire and the ends are all soldered, just to be sure to be sure...

Propellers are fitted, - - I found the missing parts - - As usual, in the last place one would think to look... :D :D

Next trip up to see the boat I may take some more pictures...

    BIG QUESTION....
I have an "el-cheapo" quality brand depth sounder and am planning to mount inside as the transom is not a very good place to put it - - but it is a "transom type fitting" - so I was looking at putting it forward from the inside - carefully cut through the inside layer of grp, wack out the end-grain balsa, - then position the transducer in a bed of epoxy with micro spheres with a bit of csm tightly pushed next to the outer skin and the transducer completely covered and glassed in place with a bit of tape over the epoxy with micro-spheres - to stop the stuff "boiling off" - Does that sound like a working solution? feedback please...

The device is not very powerful and I was looking at using the anchor watch facility in 5 to 20m of water. - or, - testing the depth in slightly clouded waters whilst seeking an overnight hold... Most of the time I would be quite happy to sit on the bottom for most of the tide and with an anchor out forward and another aft to ensure position is held...

    New Laptop...
The problems with the new laptop was that it did not have enough RAM so bought another 2G which gives me some 5G all up ??? and issues "solvered" Au$14 for the SO-DIMM module RAM isDDR-1333mhz fast stuff... I am not really up to date on the current jargon but the price had my jaw drop...

the i3 cpu is not up to AMD performance stuff I am used to, as linux then can fly along in full 65 bit multiuser/multitasking mode instead of the 32 bit version needed to work intel - Oh well it will suffice...

I can still have 2 independent screens, - on the laptop a 15.6 diagonal and beside that a 22 inch to watch a movie or view the photographs I have taken during the voyage...

Yeah you can internally mount them, don't use glass spheres though, use talc or epoxy glue. It will work OK.

...before doing all this, turn the set on and listen to see if the transducer "ticks" first to make sure it is working OK. Stick it up to your ear....

    Hi Landie,
I may not hear it - - - As thanks to "military service" I am significantly deaf at times and always inflicted with perpetual cicadas singing inside my head (I was for a while a gun aimer on 40mm 'snipers' GUN) That is a 1.6 inch bore, (40mm bofors anti aircraft WW11 vintage weapon), and auto-repeat at 120 rounds/minute spitting out either tracer, HE or AP shells... It was a magical toy but bloody loud...

    Huh what did you say???

So any other options apart from enlisting someone else's ears? :D :D - - - - Did you mean "bathroom type J&J talc" powder or need I get some 'industrial' stuff from bunnings/masters/mitre10 etc?

Thanks for the advice... Any more with any more?

Good to see Jim - The1much - is back with his usual wit and the super-sized rooster... To all and sundry, if you sent me a PM in the past month, it has gone missing, as I forgot the password and since I may be out of touch whilst wandering the coast of Queensland and maybe up to PNG my gmail address will have to suffice to receive those PM's... Tomorrow will be on the boat, hopefully sorting out the depth sounder, checking the wiring of the PV panels, & whatever I can manage...

    65-bit????? What is that?
Intel CPUs have been 64-bit for years.

Some CPU's are more equal than others and intel is not the full bottle yet else why would the Cray systems rely on AMD cpu's in their blade runners? and why does Linux write a separate OS for intel boxes and not offer a FULL 64 bit except for AMD boxes?

I have not been active in the "game" since about '90, and this box demonstrtates that intel is still not quite with-it and still "fixes" the markets to ensure their "dominance" as does Bill... I feel? - berformance in notebooks has not significantly improved since early 90's when I bought a 17" notebook (Clevo) with a screen of 1920 x 1280 with AMD and 2 gig ram and this one is no faster, and has 4gig ram 15.6 inch 1366 x 768 resolution... Both had a second screen at 1920 x 1260, but the current, (Toshiba), is only driving it at 1600 x 1200???

Happy 4 July celebrations to all you '*******', enjoy the day... :D :D :D

Oops, I forgot to take the camera... Scrubbed the dried mud and slight weed residue from below the waterline, more to do tomorrow (Friday)...

Also drained the auto-transmission oil from the sail-drive legs... Next to pump the engine oil out of both engines then recharge all with new oil AFTER replacing the oil filters...

I still have not checked the PV panel wiring. - I also have not found someone to do the epoxy work on fitting the depth transducer and glue on to a nearby bulkhead a pair of bus-bars to tidy up the solar (PV) panel wiring to the battery charge controller/regulator...

Swapped one freezer for a cute bar-fridge and get $150 back - I am happy and the other party is also happy... seems like a win-win situation to me.... :D :D

I have a new tool to get to loosen the bung at the bottom of the sail-drive leg - it has a large screw-driver blade and a "hammer-able-head", so you bang this whilst holding securely and firmly into the 'screwdriver-slot' and "tap, tap, tap", and the screw thing is loosened... All too easy... I am pleased and will go and buy one tomorrow for my boat tool kit... :D :D

Cut and fitted a new piece of hose (to deaden the vibration noise) in the central guide of the steering assembly...

One of the friendliest local hardware stores is searching for a good price for my 25 x 20 litre (US 5.3gallon?) fuel containers, DELIVERED...

Most of my time was spent enjoying the sunny warmth and wandering around the yard chatting...
