An interesting article from the French mag Course au Large came up today. The Professional Multi50 teams are investigating ways to increase fleet size under discussion are minimum weights and lifting foils. The objective is to be able to make the class more saleable from a sponsor perspective and to attempt to lift competitive fleet size to around the eight boat mark rather than the four or so currently competitive Multi50's. Retrofit costs for the existing Multi50's to integrate lifting foils is thought to be around the 150 - 200k euro mark.

I've thought for a long time that they might some day go for foils. Great story-thanks, Corley!

The bad news I take from it is that it looks like they are proposing a one design (monotype). It will make developments like Lalou Roucayrol's interesting Multi50 Arkema no longer possible.

    Flying 50's

I didn't get that but google translate is always a pain for me. Putting a cap on design development seems like a terrible shame-no matter what class.

It was actually in another snippet from class president Erwan Le Roux not the Course Au Large article:

La classe Multi50 entre dans une nouvelle ère...
Les foils font actuellement l’objet d’une étude dont les conclusions seront connues début mars. Mais l’on sait déjà qu’il s’agira de foils de sustentation, monotypes, pour des raisons de coûts....

The class multi50 enters a new era...
The foils are now the subject of a study which the findings will be known in early March. But we already know that it will be of foils of buoyancy, monotype, for reasons of cost....

Is that a google translation? If so there may be no telling what the writer really meant: "Foils of buoyancy, monotype, for reasons of cost....." Makes more sense if the "foils of buoyancy" part is removed! Oh,well.....

Yes it's a google translate which simply picks one possible definition. Another English translation of sustentation would be suspension which makes more sense in the lifting foil context.

I wonder about one design in this context (Multi50) the recent experience of the MOD70 seems to suggest that it wont be a savior or necessarily grow fleet size.

I've also heard that the Multi50 trimaran formerly known as Actual is being refitted to comply with the new rules. I haven't seen any formal press release with further information though.

    Multi 50

I remember thinking how great it would be if the Multi 50 class adopted foils.
Now that they have I wonder what they mean by foils? Curved ama foils?
Uptip ama foils with a rudder t-foil? Including a daggerboard foil?
Have you seen anything that defines what they mean by "foils"?

I haven't seen any definition of what they mean by lifting foils or any further information on the new version of class rules. I'm guessing it will mean some form of foil assist, C foils perhaps?

As French, I can help for more exact tranlation : sustentation foils mean foil assist, not foils designed for full flying.
