I am just completeing a wooden 14 foot flat iron skiff. Max bottom width is 50" fiberglass over 1/2" plywood with rocker forward and almost flat (slight rocker) aft. Nothing in the plans specifies installing longitudinals along the bottom to improve directional stability and to help protect the bottom. I am thinking a minimum of three 1x1 oak runners, bedded and screwed to the bottom. I would appreciate your thoughts on this. The boat will be periodically beached on mud and sand and will be run at planing speed getting from one fishing site to another.
