Malibu Outrigger

Peter, couple things...the weather here has been wonderful...40 -50 for last few days, and not too windy...have wet suit and if I had not stored, would have sailed it...par for the course.

Also, I should mention the akas are fastened to the main hull using 4 ss 5/8 bolts and the akas are pillowed on T-6 plates with anti roll stops on each side, and are sitting on either glass/carbon molded-in supports or teak blocks to create horizontal position or lift outside to match inside height (Hobie 18 pockets slant downward...

The outrigger is fastened with deck anchored to original Hobie posts and the akas attached with plates as above. Solid, square, and, hopefully, very seaworthy with .125 walled T-6 4" tubes...

Decided to add the bowsprit in spring.

Still have to work out way to run without stays, but not in hurry, as set for stays currently.

Also, may make foam outrigger and toss the Hobie hull...Still thinking on that.

Marc, Engaged your advice re carbon, and used only as stiffeners and support...and also to tie in some spar/line guides. It is lighter than glass, as you know and much stronger and stiffer, so I use only where I think it will perform as intended. I have lots of tow...as to cost, never was sure...tow was from Fiber-Glast and as most carbon, spendy...but worth it in most apps.

 

Re doing sail to take hook and loop luff attachments, adding carbon sprit, going wet in week or so and see what is messed up and needs fixing. Will post pics. Amazing what does not work on the wet. The stays will likely need tweaks.

One thing leads to another, simple gets complicated. Hope the 20 minute rig time is still viable.

 

Stuff happens, like rain and buying wrong hardware...near finished. But have learned to make sure to write down what is for what and to buy correct hardware. Had to exchange some hardware for stainless, being careless.

Hope to have pics of rig on water in week. Yea!

 

I know you are gnashing your teeth watching this slow death process but the sail has arrived, and I fixed a failure...that week turned into a drive to CA, visit and return, which along with the failure set me back a month...now soon.

Pick is rig without sail, failing at goose...my being a smarty did not work...so we did the plans...and all I have to do is find a way to get someone to take pics underway, to quell the gnashing...
