    The boat shop (garage) should make it all worthwhile, and a boat under construction isn't such a bad replacement view. You're now well placed to build the revolution, so go for it. (I'd race you, but I have to remove an asbestos garage and build a bigger replacement before I can start work on my boat.)

    Latest Update 11/21/18
    ==================
    WOLF specs(tentative) :

    LOA 14.8'
    Max Beam 16'
    CL ama hull to CL ama hull-14'
    Target weight 175-190lb
    SA-(mast length 24' all carbon wing mast)
    --upwind: 167 sq.ft
    --downwind: 267 sq.ft
    --max pressure before depowering/reefing: 1.79lb/sq.ft
    * NOTE-see post 2827(below)- for max pressure comparison with an F18.
    RM-max righting moment=4460ft.lb..

    ------------------------------------------------
    Advantages:
    1-Singlehander- Excellent upwind and downwind performance with 220lb crew. Minimum crew weight 120lb.
    2- Will foil in 5 knots of wind with 220lb crew .
    3-Carbon rotating wing mast, carbon cross arms and carbon foils.
    4-Retractable foils(from cockpit). Mainfoil retracts flush with bottom and tips are designed to not dig into sand. Rudder foil retracts above bottom. Ama foils retract above waterline when boat is level.
    5-Extremely comfortable sliding seat on each side. Allows crew to move 1.75' outboard very quickly.
    6-Uses the Fire Arrow Foil System(like Fire Arrow, Gitana 17, Banque Pop, Macif and Maserati)-- the same as the original system first used on the Test Model- except the larger boats use two rudder t-foils on each tack. WOLF has two UptiP ama foils-one used at a time-and one wand controlled mainfoil for very early takeoff and capable of substantial downforce- all working with a single rudder T-foil. Downforce can be virtually instantaneous adding RM in response to gusts.
    7-Foiling throughout the wind range -including very light air-the essence of 3D SAILING!
    8- Assy Spin/Screecher retracted under the front deck.
    9- Boat folds from max beam to trailerable width in about 4 minutes. No waterstays.
    10-Mid (wish)boom mainsheet so sheet is always in forward hand and extention tiller always in aft hand.
    11-Quickly self-draining cockpit-large scuppers with backflow flap.
    12- Planing ama hulls designed for incidental contact with water at speed and for inadvertent contact at slow speed.
    Adjustable angle of incidence of planing surface of each ama simultaneously. Angle of incidence of ama foil has to be changed when this is done. Planing surface starts at +4 degrees.
    Uses Two-Stage Amas-see attachments below. They consist of a planing ama hull(Stage One) coupled to a "curved piece"(Stage Two) that provides extra buoyancy in the event of a knockdown. Curved piece facilitates high dihedral crossarms which keep the crossarms clear of the water.
    13-Planing main hull.
    14- Aerodynamic surfaces added to forward and aft crossarms. Adjustable flaps added on rear cross each side. Jib foot and forward part of main foot to be sealed to deck.

    Memorable quote from JG Baker, Designer and Builder of the Monitor foiler in the 1950's:
    " The main need is to lower the wind velocities required for flying in order to increase the opportunities for high speed travel"

    ================
    --- Fire Arrow Foil System-first of its kind on any trimaran.
    Elements developed first by Fire Arrow include:
    1) the first trimaran in history to use uptip ama foils,
    2) the first trimaran in history to use a single wand controlled main foil capable of downforce,
    3) the first trimaran in history to use Two Stage Amas.(see below for Two-Stage Ama pictures)

    ROH- concept model of a "rotating hull" conceived of as a rotating ama and a multihull shape that would be good in both displacement and planing conditions. Assuming the structural problems could be solved, the boat could use lifting foils in the planing mode .The foils would automatically retract when the hull was rotated from planing to displacement mode.

    Ama set for displacement sailing:
    ROH original model 004.JPG

    Ama set for planing conditions-same hull rotates and completely changes the shape of the hull in the water:

    two technical additions to the prototype:
    1) already added to the last revision of the "advantages" of the boat above under #12(post 2825)--
    12- Planing ama hulls designed for incidental contact with water at speed and for inadvertent contact at slow speed.
    ----------------------------------------------------
    2)
    crossarm dihedral will be adjustable on the prototype to allow the angle to be refined during extensive testing. Dihedral is critical in this design because it allows the UptiP ama foils to remain down w/o having to be retracted each tack or gybe as is required on every other boat that utilizes UptiP foils. The boat will be sailed at approximately a 10 degree angle of heel to facilitate this.
    Further, the dihedral angle helps raise the center of buoyancy of the "curved" piece to make it very difficult to capsize the boat while allowing self-righting from a 90 degree knockdown. The effect of the high dihedral angle on the combined center of buoyancy of the ama planing hull +curved piece also acts to help recover from a pitchpole.

    curved piece:

    Banque Pop mainfoil-I have always suspected that this picture was not an accurate representation of the final Banque Pop main foil. The new small picture(lower right) seems to show it complete and not much larger. The boats designer said the mainfoil was capable of producing 20% of the boats total RM with downforce. Fire Arrow/WOLF , Gitana , Macif, Banque Pop and Maserati UptiP ama foils--- In case you missed it and to go along with the "study" above of the main foils, go here for a detailed look at the use of UptiP ama foils on Fire Arrow, WOLF and several large state of the art trimarans and a bit on the origin of the type:

    The key thing about these foils is that they can be designed to automatically maintain the ama flight altitude with little or no adjustment during foiling and little to no variation in altitude with speed.

    Fire Arrow Foil System Question: How small a person carrying tri using this system can be designed and built? The last time I asked myself this question my answer was 14.8' LOA X 16' Beam. I've been wondering ,lately, if the advantages that the system has would work on a boat about the size of a UFO?
    Tentative answer, 12/20/18:
    Probably would work on an 11-12' X 8' tri with 120 sq.ft. SA weighing around 135lb. The Fire Arrow Foil System would allow 2.7 times the RM of a UFO with the same crew weight and 25lb more hull weight.

    From 2016: Fire Arrow vs Aussie 18-power to carry sail

    For the first time, in this very long thread, I'm looking at the Righting Moment of the Fire Arrow compared to a well known Skiff.
    This is a comparison of the fullsize version of the Fire Arrow to a version of the Aussie 18 Skiff. I'm not even using the maximum RM possible for the Fire Arrow but her "fast cruise/daysailing" configuration.
    ----
    Take a look at Bethwaites sketch of an Aussie 18 below. Then look at the sketch showing an oversquare tri-in this case using the Fire Arrow dimensions. Both the tri and skiff are the same length and for this example will each have three crew at a total weight of 540lb. The CG of the skiff crew is at 15' from the center of buoyancy of the boat. The CG of the crew on the Fire Arrow is 14' from the center of lift of the leeward foil since they are all sitting just 3' to windward of the center of the boat.
    But the weight of the skiff and its rig do not add a thing to its RM whereas the CG of the hull and rig of the Fire Arrow are 11' from the the center of lift of the lee foil and that means:
    1) Max Skiff RM=8370 ft. lb.
    ==
    2) Fire Arrow RM =(see A & B in Fire Arrow Sketch below)
    A) 450lb hull/rig at 11'=4950ft.lb+
    --
    B) 540lb crew at 14'= 7560ft.lb =
    --
    C) TOTAL Fire Arrow RM= 12510ft.lb or 1.49 times the RM of the Skiff! And that's with the crew sitting just on the windward side of the cockpit and with no downforce from the main foil. More power to carry sail without even using Max righting moment.
    ----------------------------------
    NOTE: with downforce from the mainfoil, RM could be increased by 50% +!
    --------------------------------

    SKIFF RM illustration:

    [IMG]

    Fire Arrow RM illustration:
    See Bradfield video below. When flap is in "neutral" position on the Fire Arrow/WOLF system- that is the position of the flap just before downforce begins( up-flap). The flap reaches the neutral point due to the heeling moment of the rig which is lifting the main hull and eliminating the need for vertical lift from the main foil. Should the heeling moment cause further lift of the main hull the wand will cause the flap to rise initiating downforce. The preset neutral point of the flap can be adjusted:
