I have a Willard 30' that is 16,000lbs like the original poster put in his example. The example also specs full disp. The power requirement for a FD hull is usually said to be very close to 4hp per ton.

So if the OP is right about the displacement 50hp should be plenty of power. My Willard has about 40 and could do w less ... say 32 or 33hp.

So why is there all this talk of much bigger engines?

I'm going to assume the OP was about 100% wrong about the disp in his example.
