while looking at 9.8 4 stroke outboards for my dinghy i noticed the evinrude and parsuns are exactly the same bore and stroke. both 209 cc. is it possible the evinrude is manufactured for them by parsuns. just curious because if evinrude considered them good enough to wear the name i might buy a parsuns.

Parsuns is Chinese knock off of a Tohatsu, Tohatsu builds most of the small motors for other brands, so being similar to an Evinrude would be normal.

There are many brands of Chinese Knock offs of outboards and motorcycles.

A similar look doesn't equal similar quality.

parsuns are actually yamaha knock offs. but the 9.8 matchs the specs of an evinrude. thats why i would like to know where the evinrudes are built or i should say were built. it would not have been in the usa. tohatsu made a lot of the smaller mercs up to 50.hp i think and tohatsu 4 strokes were rebadged hondas at one stage. they all seem to share some models.

Parsuns, and the multitude of other knock offs just pick popular models and copy them, specific brands aren't limited.

You can become an importer of knock off outboards, scooters, motorcycles, flashlights, fishing reels, electronics, etc.

It's like thumbing through a catalog of items and checking the box.

Then pick own brand name and everything you order will be labeled that way.

You too could could have your name on that same outboard.

Funny the way people talk about Chinese goods being "rubbish", but their TV's and computers and smart phones are largely made there. Doesn't really add up, does it ?

Low horsepower Evinrudes were Tohatsus under the cowl. Even Low HP Mercs were just rebranded tohatsus. For that matter most of the mainstream brands of low HP outboards are really Tohatsu. I say were because Evinrude is no more. BRP has discontinued the Evinrude line. "It's a sin and a shame. " (Lauren Bacall in How to Marry a Millionaire) They will be missed. I still see a lot of Evinrudes out on the Lake. I had a little 2 hp Johnson which was just a rebranded Evinrude (or vice versa) Lasted over 30 years. The Tohatsu engines are really very good. I had a 4 HP Mercury/tohatsu for about 7 years. Never missed a beat. Traded up to 9.9 Suzuki (which is not a Tohatsu).

A parsun is a knock off. Cheap? I don't know, they seem to be gaining a following. I've seen a few of them recently. They are not very expensive compared to other outboards. Don't know how reliable they are.

Because I didn't now about the evinrude 9.8, thats all I asked about. And by the way parsun outboards are quite popular now in aus, but I have never had one.

I have a 1994 6hp Evinrude and a 1985 Johnson 15. They will last forever but the 15 is an absolute pig to start cold. The 6 starts if you look at it.

Interesting thing is my 15 was built right here in Melbourne Australia. The factory is now where bombardier build trains.

I will miss Evinrude too Ike. You would have to wonder why they would shut them down after spending so much bringing the gen 2 onto the market.
