I have a 90 hp 6 cyl mercury. Purchased new console with top mount and want to change from the standard merc side shifter. I dont understand how to deal with the start switch. Do the top mount come with a key switch and wiring to motor or do you use the old box wiring and key switch in some way?
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thank you

You can install a new switch somewhere on the panel. If you have the push to choke type, make sure you get the right switch.

On some side mount OEM shifters the key switch is removable, in which case you would just take it off the side mount box and move it to the dash.

There may be a thickness problem because the OEM switch will be designed for mounting on a thin metal box and not a 3/4" thick dashboard, but there are several ways to overcome that problem without too much difficulty.
