    Then it should be easy.
When will you demonstrate your idea?
Seems like it could be cheap to demonstrate.
    At least at the beginning.

If a dead whale can do 1 knot imagine what a live
    cat can do! thanks NV.

Whales hauled alongside made about 1 knot. I can haul along a dead cat or a carrot and they will both do 1 knot if my whaling ship is doing 1 knot

There are many functional examples of both VM (vortex manipulation, how most fish swim, see RoboTuna, RoboPike, and others), buoyancy glider (Seaglider and others), and wave orbital (Wave Glider and others) propulsion systems. I personally have tried to work out several designs, but as has been pointed out, there is presently (at least circa 2009, the last time I did a in depth look) no power effective method to replicate the muscle-neural closed loop of nature. Go study the www.robotic-fish.net webpages and associated studies for more info on the power density, sensor feedback issues. FWIW, the International Submarine Races has a non-conventional propulsion category which has had some interesting motive devices.

Thank you so much for the links. Had no idea such research was going on. Had a good look at ecologic and their manta. Most impressive.

With any luck isvara, you'll come back in your next life as a tuna!
Now there's an effective form of propulsion.

    Couple of observations;
The fish/ray propulsion is a whole of body mechanism not a separate entity like a propeller or a jet it’s integrated into the whole creature.
Marine creatures swimming are wholly immersed whereas our boats (apart from subs) are trying to operate half in water half in air so cannot be optimised for either.
    Just thinking allowed.

    "Just thinking allowed."
What a great expression, especially considering the different ways it could be interpreted!

An expression I have been using since forums came into existence, mostly for my own amusement, but today I think it has particular relevance in our struggle for freedom of speech and ideas.

A propeller is not half immersed (most of them).
Any fish copying drive would be immersed (with rare exception).
If you want freedom of ideas, lets not overly constrain the ideas.
There has always been a struggle for freedom of speech, that is something that helps drive the development of useful new ideas.

So if you are to copy the body mechanics of a fish your happy to immerse the whole boat ?
    That was my point.

NO. That was exactly NOT my point.

The drive does not have to be the same as the whole boat.

You can easily have a submerged "fish drive" without submerging the whole boat. I can't believe you made that statement.
