It really depends on what kind of use it will get.

There are some great, light weight inflatable kayaks available.

Or maybe a RIB would better suit your needs.

How big? what do you mean by "lightweight", are you planing on packing it in to a lake? What use, camping, fishing, white water river rafting, etc.?

Durable inflatable boats are not light, and not easy to inflate. A folding kayak is far more practical than an inflatable boat, but that depends on how large a boat you need.

I have owned a number of inflatable boats, I was not pleased with any of them for my use (they do not paddle very well at all). Now I own several light weight skin on frame sea kayaks and several small dinghys, which serve my needs much better than the inflatables ever did (lighter and faster to get off the roof of the car into the water). However, it depends what your needs are, and plans for the boat.

Please describe what use you have in mind.

"Inflatable boat" as a description covers a very wide range of boats, from tiny single person toys for use in pools and very sheltered water at one end to large rigid inflatable boats capable of carry many people at high speed in rough water.

How many people do you want it to carry?

How do you want to propel it? (oars, outboard motor, or even sail)

What sort of water conditions do you want to use it in? (open sea, river, lake, sheltered coastal water)

How do you want to transport it? (folded up in a bag in a big car/truck, on a trailer, on the roof of a car or truck)

Pick the ugliest inflatable you can find and paint it with a really lousy color combination, using a wire brush, so it doesn't get stolen.

As Jeremy has mentioned, you need to define you needs. In fact, do your needs actually require an inflatable?

    All, very good questions.

Laura if you define what you need you'll answer your own question without even knowing it!

    Fantastic!

    Hello,
The best design is a catamaran style inflatable boat (the floor over water): ECONOMICAL, FAST, safe. Please, see: http://www.aquamaxdirect.com/index....ath=72&zenid=0931d59a5daccabc1ef5b55bf7828a11
If you wish, I have one for sale. More details? E-mail me, please.
    Good luck. Regards.

Yes. They are fast only (sport inflatable boats): bigger motor is heavy, expensive and drunks a lot of gasoline for max. 3, 4 people. You can't install a sail on it. It is uncomfortable for rowing. AquaMaxx BUG catamaran is more economical, needs small electric or gas outboard (of course: you can install 35 HP monster too if you need more speed). I used 6 HP Yamaha 4 stroke w/long shaft (weight70 lbs.) for 7 people on a board (7 people is a max.). Strong enough. Electric motor is much lighter. You can also use a solar panel (s). for it. Paddles are included. Total weight of a set is 100 lbs. Good luck.
