The caterpillar twin turbo acert engines meet regulations with no emission controls just by good design. I wonder if they used vw's methods.

Well, if it has no effect on particulates, and you seem pretty cluey on the subject matter, I see it as being a lot easier to wriggle out of. Were it the case we had all been sucking extra carcinogens, it would be ta-ta, as every cash-strapped govt worldwide went them for damages !

Car makers have always used tricks to comply with exhaust regulations.
There is a Porsche 928 in my garage, built in 1980 (the car, not the garage). It has a very dirty 4.7 Lt. engine with continuous injection through 9 nozzles, one for each cylinder, the 9th in the plenum for easy starting. No catalytic converter or afterburner, so it produces massive amounts of CO, especially when idling.
To meet the California requirements an air pump is installed that blows lots of fresh air in the exhaust, diluting the gases so there was less than 2.5% CO measured by the exhaust gas analyzer!

VW builds very efficient and clean diesel engines, good mileage, lots of power. The lean burn principle inevitably leads to an increase of Nitrous oxide in the exhaust and there is no easy way to trap that, so they complied with the current regulations by adding a small piece of firmware that recognizes the test situation and slightly alters the settings.

No matter what the reasoning was they got caught . All the people that purchased vw' since 2009 have been lied to. If i had one i would not be happy if i ended up with a lower powered vehicle than what i paid for. Who would be.

Even journalists from car magazines don't seem to understand or just don't care to read the details. I just saw a TV program where the host said the VW scandal is about fuel economy.
It is not! And it also is not about engine power. "Blue Motion" diesels only produce more NOx on the road than they do during a test. NOx content in exhaust gases is very low compared to CO2 (less than .5%), but yes, it is a greenhouse gas.

Unreasonable demands upon engine manufacturers have led to this sad state. Reign in the various agencies destroying capitalism under the guise of protecting the environment.

Wouldn't surprise me if all automakers were up to similar tricks, just maybe not quite as overreaching.

If I was a good lawyer for VW I'd get an "independent" team looking at every new car being sold.

I'd have them use a decent clip-on sensor and start renting and/or test driving late model used cars, with video rolling and some respected academics or environmentalists on board.

Then announce that the VW scandal is but the "tip of the iceberg" and that over 90% of cars sold in last 5yrs fail to live up to their emissions claims in Real World Testing (at least some of the time), and that this is largely the fault of lazy Govt officials being lead around by their noses and not doing real testing themselves.....

so what VW was doing was SOP in the industry, so unless you want to go back to horse and buggy.....

VW are really behind the 8 ball as all the others have cat cons to meet the requirement from that era.

Really ?. Is this all you can come up with . . .the worlds populations are increasing and so are the amount of vehicles , pollution has to be kept under control, i don't want my grandkids to wear face masks everywhere like parts of china do now. Fast fred needs to move into this century too, we CANNOT have diesels belching black smoke like the good old days. I pulled up beside a kenworth with an 892 on Thursday, i watched it take off because i love 2 stroke gm, s. I had forgotten how smoky the old motors were. It was normal and we thought nothing of it.

I had a late 70s Passat with the air pump, figured that all it was doing was diluting emissions but supposed it's load actually increased the overall.
