What are your thoughts on a 50hp approximate diesel? We are repowering a 1930 Elco 30ft cruiser. The main issue is quiet- yes we will isolate the mounts and shaft and box it in but the smoother/quieter we start with the easier our job. The only other issue is height- shorter is better. We don't want to deal with something that will be difficult to service or get parts for. Thanks

If you want quiet and about that hp= marinize a VW TDI 1.9 l.

Then attenuate the engine room with the proper tiles and it'll be pretty much silent...

Take a VW 1.9 TD (without the I), it generates less noise because it has injection chambers. Put is on soft rubber engine mounts and install a flexible shaft coupling or an U-joint assembly.
That setup requires a thrust bearing block to avoid any axial force on the engine/gearbox.
When properly done it can be as silent as any gasoline engine.

Get a John Deere 80hp factory rebuild from the tractor shop.

Marinize it and stick on a rebuilt Twin Disc tranny, good bang for the buck.

When you operate there will be less danger of overloading a light duty car engine, when you sell it , there will be less concern about the engine .

Does anyone have thoughts about the Beta 50 marine engine? Alternatively, what about the John Deere 4045 - I believe the M1 rating is greater than what the OP asked about, but curious on experts experience with that engine in this application.

I've been at remote mine/logging sites, with 4045 and Perkins gensets that were pushing 15-20k hours and doing fine.

I actually am a Ford/New Holland tractor dealer so I would have to keep the John Deere motor a secret but does anyone have personal experience with the quietness of that motor and also- which motor are we talking here. I agree that JD would have better resale value but quiet is the trick. Thanks

Steve Dashew uses the 4045s in his Windhorse...google him up.
They sound like pretty much any other modern industrial diesel.

If your concerned about sound- attenuate it with mounts, anechoic tiles, vibration dampers, cocooning.

Noise is my pet peeve as well-from the front and side my boat is almost silent-I sneak up on kayakers...I've had people ask me if my boat is electric.

At the helm at low speeds all that gets through is the low frequency rumbles.

IMO, the new car diesels have put a lot more effort into reducing noise than other diesel engines.

Surreyequip - The reason I brought up the JD (I was thinking the 4045 DFM 50 with an M1 rating of 75 HP at 2400 rpm) was becuase of a report I got from a friend who is a well respected builder.

When I mentioned I was looking at that particular engine for a similar application (raised deck cruiser), he said he has considered it in several applications but received bad reports on how smooth it ran at idle speeds. He confessed he didn't have personal knowledge becuase he opted of other engines based on those reports. I'm still looking for someone who has first hand knowledge of this engine to confirm those reports. Hopefully you will have better luck getting info than I had.

And don't worry, if you go JD I'll keep your secret.

Boy I must be strange --My 2x250HP Yanmar engines howl ,--I cant make them louder, they are straight through systems and it sounds like a Lancaster bomber when shes up and running.

It kinda makes me feel all warm and squidgy inside .

I like it best when it makes children cry when I fire them up.

    My bike is the same.

I guess I could need some mental attention dunno do'nt care really.

I have no idea what a JD is.

    What about gas engines?

I was also thinking about a 3.0 gas motor (4 cyl) or a 4.3 V6- lots of them available that need rebuilding- I am assuming maybe incorrectly that if they bolt up to an outdrive they will bolt up to a marine trans. How smooth can we get them running, they should be quieter than a diesel. I only considered the V6 on the theory that 6 cylinders should run smoother than 4. Thoughts?

Surrey-gas is quieter and the 4.3 gas engines are smooth, however for myself I wouldn't have gas in anything but a runabout or water ski type boat.

The Dodge V-10 runs pretty smooth.
