Less than a month now...

 

Just bounced onto this thread Mark. Tell us more about this handsome vintage Zizka! I've scanned the roster for the R2AK race and I'm glad to see a good variety of boats racing this year. Hopefully you've got some muscle on board to row Ziska through the narrows. She looks just a bit heavy, but I would rather be on a handsome wooden sailing vessel than a trimaran or rowboat ANY day of the week.

That's definitely a long course for a SUP paddler. The race organizers will need to keep a close eye on them. They are more vulnerable than most paddlers.

Well Doug, that was a great article on what can obviously turn out to be a crazy race. "The weather is cruel, the rules are clear, and fairness has got nothing to do with it." That about sums it up. With the high winds, strong tides & tall waves the sailors were at a significant advantage. A sailboat's only setback is no wind. One doesn't want to be taking on 35kt winds + 6ft waves + tides in a kayak, rowboat or SUP. For anyone considering this race, it's hard to plan when the weather can be so unpredictable. In my opinion, a tough, light sailboat that can slip through winds, tides and row too is your best bet.

Well, Team R2Ache with a modified MacGregor 26 finished the 40 miles in stage 1 in 1st place. Congrats to them. Looks to be a tough boat. But can they go the distance in calm winds against tides with nothing but that paddle wheel of a propulsion system!? Mark Twain might think so. I'm not so sure. The spacious berths below decks will provide nice accommodations for resting the crew...and rest is a plus in a long race.
