I am going to just put a glimpse of my project. I may have more to come, but I am thinking of redesigning it to have better surfing characteristics. Currently no sea trials and I am still working on the Ama. But I am sure this design will have great upwind and sprint characteristics. First couple show hull before and after epoxy. The last few show with deck and all varnished. I'll post some final pics when finished. Maybe I'll post some pics of process when I build the second one. Its all WRC except the stripe on the deck which was my parents old doorstep of a cottage on Puako Beach that I tore down when I build them a new home.

Oh, btw It is 21' long and about 14" wide and will flair out too 15-16" slightly where the seat will be to help accomodate a minicell foam seat. I am still looking at seating and leg hole options. Wether to leave hull open or enclose and make it fully sit-on-top style w/venturi drain etc.... In the really glared photo you can almost make out the iako holders that have been epoxied into place. Sorry they are all just phone pics.

    OC1 Strip Plank

    Hi Bill,

First I must say; what a beautiful looking craft your Strip Plank OC1 is.
For a while I have been tinkering with the idea of building a hollow wood SUP but have recently got into Waka Ama (outrigger racing) and am now thinking of building my own OC1/W1.
Wondering if you have any tips/tricks/ideas/plans/designs/words of wisdom for a very green designer/builder?
Also, what is the finished weight like with this type of construction?

    Kind regards,
    Nick Woolsey

    Aloha Nick,
This was actually my first OC1 build. My next one is going to be done using thinner strips koa w/mango feature stripe and hawaiian fishhook inlay work in the strip done in koa, new hull shape (first prototype works well but is hard to steer and I am in the process of chopping the tail and adding a rudder, I believe it was made with too deep a v along the keel line), also going to do some other changes to make it lighter (carbon fiber inside and possibly to reinforce the bamboo after carving). The hull weighs 30lbs. light enough for my taste, but I'm a bit of a monster in paddling. On the next one I am shooting for 30lbs total weight rigged. I will be awhile until I am able to get to the next one, create plans and instructions, because I am currently building my new home that will include a much better shop area for building. I should finish the home this winter and begin the next canoe. The next one should be finished by spring or slightly earlier. If your still interested I could find a fair price for plans and instructions. FYI, studying Nick Shade's book, website and other strip planking information resources is incredibly useful.

    Beautiful OC1

Aloha Bill... came across pictures of your canoe today while researching rudderless OC1's for a project of my own. Followed the picture link to this thread and couldn't resist trying to find out if I could see your boat in person one day. It came out beautiful.

I'm here on the Big Island as well and have a bit of experience building strip projects; OC2 outrigger canoe, HWS surfboards, kayaks and bunch of strip waveski's. Might be fun to exchange ideas.

    PM me if your interested.

What Points in Schades Books are recommended

    Hey Bill,

I am interested in building a rig similar to yours. It is a beauty. I am curious as to why you recommended Nick Schades Book? More specifically, what points or aha moments were the most revealing or informative about building strip crafts. I will be buying the book either way. Just wanted to go in understanding the highlights.

What is your experience with boat building/shaping prior to your crafting the OC1? Beside the book and schades website. Are there resources in this forum or elsewhere that were necessary in making this project easier to figure out?

I am good with my hands (auto mechanic, general craftsman) this will be my first attempt at building anything that floats!

Last questions (promise) how long did the build take?

    Must have tools?

    Thanks in advance.
