Help with project boat

Hello everyone, I am in need of some help with my project. While searching the web for answers I came across this forum, seems like there is a wealth of knowledge here. Hopefully you guys can help point me in the right direction.
I have a 1995 robalo 2440 Walkaround. Over the past winter the hull developed cracks along the strakes, it turned out that the wood core of the strakes have become saturated with water and they froze and cracked.
I have been looking for ideas on what to do with it. How important are the strakes to the hull? I have seen many hull designs that don't have any. Can I just cut them off and fiberglass over? What do you think the boats performance would be like after that? Is that even possible.
Are there any other ideas I should be looking?

 

Unless you're really in love with this boat, I would suggest you would be time and money ahead to shop for a solid hull.
If the strakes are waterlogged, you can suspect the stringers, bulkheads, transom, and probably the floor to be damaged as well.
There are many such projects documented in this forum, and plenty of advice on how to do it "right", but with the price of used boats, especially without trailer and power, its a no-brainer to just trade up and keep on fishing.

 

i have some questions on the construction of the strakes. Do they extend from inside the hull to the outside? Or are they just attached to the outside of the hull? If that makes any sense.

 

With a hull like that, it would be easy to find out. Just get a grinder and take out a section.

Its not going to create that big a repair job considering the amount of other work you have to do.

IF its a solid fibreglass hull, you may find that the strakes are not 'add ons' but a part of the structure, and the amount of glass on the inner side of the hull is relatively small. Its very rare that strakes get placed on the outside of the hull after the moulding.

This means that kapND's advice might be very pertinent - as the whole hull could be compromised with splits along the strakes.

A few photos would make the situation clearer for other eyes.
