If I do the typical long keel and skeg like most trawlers have, that could provide quite a bit of room for ballast, it would just be more spread out fore/aft than the original keel.

You will also need to recalculate weight distribution and underwater volume (depending on how you build the long keel and skeg you might end with more or less underwater volume). So you either redraw the hull or make some in water stability tests. Basicly all that you would calculate on a new design has to be done.
Considering how much a new bare hull costs, the donor hull has to be very complete and with an elaborate nice interior for it to make sense, but that is not my call.

Seller never got back to me, so no deal. This prospect made me investigate where I could keep a boat and I was rather shocked at what I found. The west coast of MI has some Marina's closed due to flooding from high lake levels so slips are in high demand. The average price seems to run close to 4k a season. The cheaper places are sold out with waiting lists come fall for next season. I had a long discussion with my wife and we concluded that the conversion of the smaller sailboat is probably not a worthy project, it would be more beneficial to buy something that is ready to go and suited to the loop application as is. I did "discover" the Bayliner 3270 with Hino diesels, wasn't aware of that option and it makes a lot more sense than some of the alternates. So for now, investing my time in getting my house ready to list, when it's sold, I may be ready for the Bayliner.....

    Excellent!

And from your Post #32 earlier :
"I find it extremely perplexing why it is that anyone proposing doing anything but being a consumer is so vilified on this "boat design forum" ? Once again, at least 80% of posts suggest doing nothing except buying a boat, when the attributes I seek are not being catered to by the market."

I must admit that I am pleased to see that you have gone off the idea of converting a sailboat hull - something like a Bayliner 3270 should be a much better 'Great Looper'.
Is this the boat that you are referring to above?

Don't be too hasty though - there are literally 100's of other suitable craft out there as well.

Yes, that seems like a pretty good deal locally. Most likely will sell by the time I am ready, but there seem to be quite a few of them around.

I think if I like taking a similar boat out in the Bahamas, then can think more seriously about plans for the Pacific. With the current flap going on in French Polynesia who knows how cruising in the Pacific is going to look like in a few years ? All the old spots may be off limits ?

Looks like someone else had a similar idea, not a quality execution of the job.....

Ugh. No interior enclosed spaces above deck.

They started with too little boat to begin with. The water line length is only 20 ft.

Original ballast was 1800lb, must have been internal to the keel structure.

yeah...it could be modified with a light house I suppose, but I think the wheel being left in place really messed it up...I can't imagine four days of rain would be much fun and it could be with a full enclosure..

Is that S2 boat still for sale Keith?
The sellers says he will sell it for $6,500 without the trailer - if it is still for sale now, he would probably take $5k for it happily, maybe even less.
She has a Yanmar 2 cylinder diesel which would have been added later (maybe by the seller?), and a lot of equipment - if he sells it for $5k, and he did all the work, he will only realise a small fraction of what he put into the project.

That's an S2 sailboat with the keel and rudder cut down. The engine is original and I think that was the only option for those boats.
