crusing sailboat(of any size) as "bug-out" option for Zombie Apocalypse???

a vegetable garden makes for a good ballast system!

It's a bit tricky to get the sunshine in, but I’ve you keep sailing near the equator that will not be a problem...
You can grow your vegetables in buckets, so you can actively balance you’re ship, and keep them in the sun when not sailing!

Sqiddly: What you describe seems to fit like a glove with the british No.76 Phosphorous grenade. Its a milkbottle with a mixture of White phosphourus, water, benzine and a strip of rubber. Designed as a last dich anti tank defence. A special version with a more robust bottle and a cork sabot was made to be fired from light mortars. If it worked on nazi tankers it should make short work of zombie boaters dont you think?

Hey now, I said the chances of a zombie apocalypse are zero. Even if zombies spawn tomorrow there will be no apocalypse, the government would distroy EVERYTHING and somebody would take credit and get re-elected.

Fred, I hear you on that one..
I never said there would not be something apocalyptical, I'm a prepper, I've got a pack hanging in my closet and another in my trunk.

I was thinking about putting a sheet or two of Kevlar in the sides of my catamaran. That might stop some of those lead projectiles.

Fast Fred 'gets it' but didn't mention a few extra factors.

Not only is some melt down and hyperinflation inevitable, when it happens in the USA there wont be anyone big enough or willing to step in to mitigate any of it.

1)A "meltdown" and "regime change" in a nation that is ethnically homogenous, or at least stably divided, is one thing...this will be something else.

In the USA we have near a 1/2 dozen large ethnic groups, and at least a dozen smaller ones, with varying degrees of radicalization as to their ethnic loyalty and separatist-ness.

We got Mexican, Black, Chinese, Muslim and Hindu groups...and these groups exist in huge blocks in all major cities and large towns, and would never consider aiding the others "as fellow Americans". Even today, in "public life" with everyone watching, it is more or less an excepted 'open secret' being of same ethnic group will govern how an employer or even Govt official will treat you. And this is all very much "in flux" with these groups feeling they are gaining or losing ground.

What will be affect of meltdown and chaos on the teeming masses gathered at the Mexican border? Probably "both". Some will flee, some will see their chance to bum-rush the USA.

At the very least, it will be like trying to herd cats, but probably a whole lot worse, and very likely really bloody and murderous and something that will eclipse things like Rwanda.

2)We got hella guns, from Saturday Night Specials to top of the line sniper rifles, already in private hands, legally and illegally, here is USA....and ammo, lots of ammo. Most people have them for "protection" but once the fighting starts it ain't gonna be easy to stop. I'd say "differences of opinion" even among well meaning "survivalists" over road blocks and check points will be enough to spark violence.

3)It isn't a matter of "if" but when we have the next uncontrollable outbreak of some new deadly plague. But with jet airliners and loose travel regulations(gotta have those SF tourist dollars, right?) it is a sure bet some germ originating anywhere in the world will find its way here and probably spread first and fastest in the highly 'mobile' USA. (what the diff between USA and rest of the world? in USA we think 100yrs is a long time and in rest of the world they think 100 miles is a long distance)

Fact is even in USA with "FEMA camps" we really don't have any workable plan in place or on the horizon to deal with a outbreak of new plague, natural or man-made.

4)Around the world, most peoples and their Govts might not actually "wish ill" on the USA, but it wouldn't break their hearts if we "got ours", and that includes every nation we've meddled in and ever defeated in a war- hot, cold or trade war.

Padilac, I'd also want a "prop fouler" as seen on "Whale Wars" for nonlethal

disabling of hostile vessels, and a towable mine or even string of mines.

I figure if about 10lbs of explosive goes off 1000meters more or less to my stern and more or less near them they will probably be scanning horizon for a US Navy destroyer and thinking 'the gig is up'.

Another toy would be the short range mini RC torpedo. That would be deadly because to "deal with me" on a slow sailboat their Fast Boat will need to be heave-to and basically stopped near by, even if they are being cautious and launching a dingy. Unless they first do enough high speed straffing passes to kill me(and that would be utterly destroying or sinking the boat) I'd say I'd "have them" with a mini torpedo.

Deploy it over the side with a slip-tow out of their sight at first sighting and operate from concealed position. Technical challenge would be knowing where it is in relation to my boat and theirs, so I'd need a radio beacon on it linked to radar screen.

PS-I don't think the No.76 was an explosive, just a 'stick to it and burn' and at least take the panzer out of its 'game plan'. I'd be wanting something to at a minimum provide enough concussion to instantly knock all bad guys on their *** for a moment.

Squidly start watching some WWII flicks, record some cannon blast, buy a giant speaker. When the time comes take your speaker and recorder ( a backpack full of food and water as well) to the nearest marina. Pick you out a boat , any boat you want so long as some else is not on it, who may have a 30-06 or shot gun. If anyone comes after you hit the recorder and scare hell out of them. Chance,s are if you build and stock a bug out boat , it will be long gone by the time you get to where it was. Rick

Here is how a true Zombie Apocalypse would unfold.....

Remember those kidney stealing Rabbis in NYC and Israel?

(what gets me about that case is no way in hell do you just show up with some unknown Black Market kidney and do a transplant operation...even I know enough to see it required involvement of at least a dozen highly placed professionals whatever major hospital was involved...booking an operating room for kidney transplant isn't like signing up for a tennis court time...but I digress)

What if some blood infecting plague breaks out and the only treatment is transfusions of non-infected blood?!?!?!

Pretty soon we would be running short of willing donors within the existing "one pint a month" schedule, and we would also quickly see people only willing to give blood to friends and family, or ethnic or religious "community", because they don't want to be the ones running short because they already gave all they could.

Well, being as a blood transfusion can be a "do it yourself" or Emergency First Aid by minimally trained and equipped, it isn't hard to imagine how things would start to both "get very bad" and get much much weirder.

If you knew the only why to stop Them from sucking you dry and dead was to be able to show you were also infected, and possibly willing to join them in finding victims to keep you both alive till someone finds a cure.....

I've gotta do some research for my new semi-fact based sci-fi horror novel/movie.

PS-In my novel I think I'll have the infection also effect your state of mind, like the last stages of Rabies, and/or have the only other treatment be large doses of meth or other mind-altering mood-changing drug....and not some mellow or depressant drug.

Relocate to a remote island chain where your boat can be your livelihood. Transport goods and people in trade for resupply.

good points, RBerry, and one reason I'd want to be able to bug-out at first sign

of anything and use that as an excuse to do a little sailing. Win/Win.

I'm also thinking the Marina might be one fairly robust safe-haven, security wise at the start of Zombie Apocalypse because most already have strong locking gate with barbed wire and most residents know each other and would be on the 'same page' and allied against outsiders.

Another option is a trailer-able boat like MacGregor. Also able to double as land based travel-trailer if you choose to 'head for the hills'.

Sure, it isn't considered an offshore boat but if you can dodge storm systems I think you'd be OK. And the big outboard and high sprint speed might come in handy especially escaping the harbor/bay/coast.

Boat launch ramps might be a fairly underused facility during start of a Zombie Apocalypse as your normal recreational users would be elsewhere.

While there aren't too many ramps, it might be doable to launch such a shallow draft boat Kamikaze Style at many points on the mud flats. Maybe lay plywood or planks on the marsh and mud at low tide and reverse at high speed not caring if truck and trailer get swallowed in the mud, and float off at high tide, and hope They don't get you while you wait.

A Jarcat maybe the way to go for you. Double,s up as a camper, shallow draft and beachable. A coastal cruiser kept near shore to be able to run from bad weather, and resuply often, other wise you would need a blue water boat with a big payload. The gear you put in it would be the important and deciding factor. Dont take the potato gun no matter how small or light weight it is. Two guns , 1 long rifle (300mag or below due to ammo cost ) 1 large cal. revolver 41 or 44 mag ( again due to ammo cost and avalablity) or sawed offed shotgun. You will have a hard time finding a SS shotgun so go for the first two. You will need protection from long range and short range threats. A small wood burning stove ( shipmate or navagator).Hand pump watermaker, ect. ect .ect. Again buy the long rifle and revolver and you can come up with a well equipted boat if the need arises, maybe even one that already has some else on it. Rick

The most simple way to bug out and escape the Zombies?

Just go to the water and find the first blue water boat you come across and head out.

Hint: Don't take mine - I do have the short barrel marinized shotgun! ha ha ha

Squidly: one of the most devastating things to encounter in a relatively small boat is fire.
You would not need concussion effect if you got enough of a firestarter to be the end of all molotovcoctails. As to torpedoes, how about a largish R/C boat with a submerged spear ending in a blackpowder charge. Could be set off with percussion cap on impact or electronically by remote. Nice big blast submerged right next to the hostile hull, and no problem seeing where your weapon is related to your target. Pretty off the shelf tech too. Prop fouler? A large spool or tangle of floating line, and or floating nets. Doesent have to be very thick, but some additional floaters may be requried. Once its in the water it is hard to detect when they have their eyes on you. Might I also suggest some sustaind fire capability? If you take the "gatling" idea of putting two Ruger 10/22 rifles upside down in a frame with crankfiring each rifle alternately, and boost it up with something worthwhile, say at couple of Browning Bars for instance? You would have a fire platform from, if not Hell, then someplace close. Magazines would stick right up, so easily chanched.
