canting rudder ?

has anyone made a rudder that stays up right as a boat heels ?

ie a turntable on the stern or other device ?

powered by gravity or some motor or ?

comments ?

 

Inland Lakes scows are intended to sail in heeled attitude. They have twin rudders and centerboards that are canted. Some hot rod type larger boats also have twin canted rudders and some of them have a canting keel. I have not heard of a centrally located rudder that could be canted so as to respond to heel angle. Surely it has been tried. Maybe some of the other forum members know of such an innovation. The operative question would be: Is that ability even worth the complication?

Sure enough a boat that is heeled will have the rudder affecting the lee bow immersion or weather bow immersion depending on which way the rudder is turned. That is the subject for some trigonometric analysis to determine how much influence the rudder tilt of a conventional boat would have on the trim of the boat.

Opens now use twin rudders.

 

looks like thursdays child used ropes and a curved track lower point and braced upper pivot
how did the rig do
was that boat converted to doubles or just newer boats ?

did not think I was first but had not seen one

 

More recent pics show the same rudder. She is a much narrower boat than the current Opens so may have no need for twin rudders.
