    Hi again all,

Quite a simple question i cannot find a definitive answer to at present.

I am now in the process of building aluminium boats, from 12 to 21 feet (photo of 1st 12ft one attached), looking into the option of building aluminium trailers to go along with them.

But as i say i cannot find a definitive answer on the certification requirements for them, there look to be many different ways, loopholes and vague laws around it.

Anybody know the whole truth on this?

    Thanks

Not sure what the situation is in Scotland but in North America it is cheaper to buy trailers from trailer manufacturers than build them yourself. Trailer manufacturers purchase the axles, springs, or torsion components at OEM pricing. Generally the aluminum price point is determined by the volume that you buy. Ie buy 30,000 pounds, then the price is much much lower than buying a few lengths of channel or structural pieces and build them yourself.

I would do an honest breakdown of the axles, frame material, ubolts if a bolt together, bunks, lights, coupler, wiring, etc hours to build a few trailers at a time, and compare to an off the shelf self built. The really large high volume boat manufacturers in North America purchase trailers from high volume trailer manufacturers.
