Guess so, but a rose by any other name is just as sweet, no?

We named our boat "Medusa" almost 30 years ago and often wondered why the radio operators were laughing when we made a ship to shore call in the Adriatic Sea.
Much later we discovered it means jellyfish in the local languages here.

well, "jellyfish" would be a perfectly good name for some types of ships.

Having gone from Molly to Miss Molly to Mischief for the name of the 15' double ender I'm working on this thread has me looking to mythology now.
Lethe, the river of forgetfulness in Hades, might be fun. When someone asks what the name means I could respond 'I forget.'

I always liked the name Circe, it is the name of a sorceress or sea witch out of Homer's Odyssey. Odd thing about it is it is a Latin misspelling of the Greek "Kerkie" which means falcon.

There are lots of interesting names of various sea monsters, gods and goddesses out of the Odyssey, including the better known names Calypso (also a witch), and Kraken (a sea monster). as well as the even older sea faring tale of Jason and the Argonauts (the oldest sea story in human history, from the bronze age). It is interesting that many of the names have been preserved and are known across many cultures as well.

I guess a good story is hard to forget.

I bought a sailboat called Trust once. My wife complained that the name was goofy. I solved it by scratching out the "T" and re-naming the boat "rust".

Imagine what she might have thought if it was named LUST...

Or, if you'd scratched out to spell lust.
