Interesting idea alan, I thought you were sanding the bungs off.
I guess the slight excess on the sanding discs would work, pretty small bungs though as the disk would stop you dead after about 1/4". Am I still missing something?

 

I AM sanding the bungs right down. This takes about one second per 1/2" bung. I use 50 or 60 grit. When you get almost flush, you stop. Later you go over the whole surface with longboard or lighter grit. I angle the sander and watch the bung go down at the edge of the disc, stopping when I am grazing the surface.

 

I guess that it depends on the wood the bungs are made of. IMO the time it takes to sand down a bung with any type of sander would be better spent on a fine pull saw, a sharp chisel, a sander? I don't think so .

You are going to put a 1/32nd" radius on anything? I could do that with a piece of sand paper, probably 100 grit. What exactly are you talking about???

I've done it every way. Sanding by using a random orbit with 50 grit is fastest. Period. Not much of a basis for argument when one of us is speaking from experience and the other shaking his head in disbelief (but has't tried it!). Give it a try and then comment.

 

Could you be more specific in your question, including a quote of mine you're referring to?

I find it hard to believe you can sand bungs with 60 grit without putting divets in the planking. I also wonder how people in here get anything done spending enough time to post 5 times a day.
