Any one have link to FREE really FREE, Software for Apple

Help needed from you software gurus out there.

Yes, I use Apple computers and I would like to know if there is a truly FREE hull design program out there.

I have OS X 10.6.8 not the latest on Apple OS, but relatively new. I just need to electronically design a

Hawaiian outrigger canoe hull, rather that drawing it out on paper.

I plan to do the first hull foam by using the core construction method.

Free and Apple are not synonymous.

 

In my opinion if you would like using Apple, you may want to download any of variety of virtual machines software, install it on Apple and then install Windows on that virtual machine. After that you have a slew of free software running on you shiny Apple.

I used this one and it works well, supported and has lots info on the net if you have troubles.

 

Hmmm. That explains why, as a software developer, the only program I've paid for is M$ Office 2011 and that only because I needed to reverse-engineer some (hack spit) VBA code.

And, to pre-empt the obvious counter, no, there is no unlicensed software on my computer.

But then I am an unreconstructed unix person and actually know how to use shells and CLI driven software.

However I don't know offhand of a free CAD package that's any good. Here I'd install a virtual machine, a copy of Windows and whatever package needed.

But if you must buy Windows, don't you have to add that to the cost of the
CAD program? That means it's not "FREE really FREE", which is what the OP
wanted.

 

LOL! Yes, it is somewhat funny to see someone buy a PC from possibly the priciest brand around, and then want to install a free software on it.

Regarding your question, I have no clue. I am just a poor Windows PC user. Considering the Apple's snobbish software policies, I would be surprised to see there is a similar freeware around.

What you can do is, imo, one of following solutions:

1) Install a Windows emulator (like Wineskin: http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/ti...on Mac OS X without needing Microsoft Windows) and use a freeware hull design software for Windows, like Freeship: http://www.hydronship.net/index.php?lang=en), or
2) create a virtual Windows ambient with VM VirtualBox: https://www.virtualbox.org/ and run the Freeship in that ambient, or
3) spend some $500 for a medium-to-decent Windows PC and use it for hull design. It is still less than a cost of many CAd software, and will allow you to use countless other freeware software for Win PC.

Gerris CFD is free (GPL licence) and works in OSX 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8 (even though it is Unix, Ubuntu native).

Its a very powerfull CAD Software which is used by virtually all car manufacturers in the world. Except of some volumetric measurings (displacement) its use is not intented for boatbuilding. The trial is free for 30 days or if you are a mentor, like me, its free for unlimited time. Don't use it commercially!
