290 ratio

    Hi Which outdrive ratio will work on Volvo 290 DP to mate a Volvo kamd42 230hp? Thankssss

    290 A Ratio 1.61 , 1,89, 2.15 : 1

    DP ratio 1.78 , 1.95 , 2.30 : 1

    You should use the 1.78:1 ratio with this engine.

    The rated RPMs of the engine is about 3900, so a low gear ratio is appropriate. However, it has to be matched to what the target speed is.

    The ratio recommended above (1.78:1) will give an advance ratio ("lambda") from ~0.7 to 1.4 in the speed range 20 to 40 knots, which is a range where the pitch/diameter ratio will result in optimum propulsive efficiency. With the restriction on prop diameter you have with the antiventilation plate, you would not be able to get better thrust at lower speeds if you used a lower propshaft speed, since that would require bigger prop diameters!

    The other ratios are used for the four cyl diesels and for the gasoline Engines.
