I have just acquired this motor with a (thought to be bad) "Clutch dog".
I have tore into (car motors) alot, however no (outboards). In the interest of saving $$ and learning I would like to tear into it myself, but again in the interest of (comon sense) assumming I have any, is it wise to repair it myself?

    Thanks in advance,

Old Johnson Evinrudes are the best candidates for restoring or, just fixing up, for actual use. Plenty of parts available for those that age and older. First thing should be to get a very good book for people that want to do what you are looking at.

A good read from a very practical guy.

The first rule of any mechanical repair is never let fear or common sense hold you back...

A Service Manual and a Parts Catalog for that specific motor would be a boon, before you ever turn a wrench on it.

clutch dog not engaging is very likely adjustment.

    Good advise thus far indeed.

The other thing you may want to do is look up your local service centre, a good one, and talk up your purchase. If one of the mechanics seems interested, they may be your new best friend. Buy him or her beer, coffee, whatever it takes.

    Do you have any pictures?
