  1. MikeStrasbaugh added new media Conceptual Model, NS United States 2 to Member Album by MikeStrasbaugh

They say the greatest projects are never truly finished… ——————N/S UNITED STATES 2—————— NS UNITED STATES 2 would be 1,190 ft long and 124ft wide with 12 decks. She would boast a passenger compliment of 4,000 with affordable fares for all economic and social classes for guests around the world. POWER-PLANT: Her machinery spaces will be split, as on the SS United States, however her propeller and rudder arrangement will be vastly different. I have chosen a more Iowa Class/ Montana Class Battleship arrangement. United States 2 will have dual rudders and four propellers, the outer shafts will be protected by bossings rather than being exposed such as on the battleships. The superliner will be nuclear powered, the type of propulsion and reactor plant will not be disclosed, as neither will her top speed or SHP but she is expected to be VERY fast if needed to ensure she can maintain a strict schedule. Both funnels will be utilized for machinery such as jet turbines to produce more power for hotel loads and other equipment. She will incorporate four bow thrusters and two retractable stern thrusters. She will also have two sets of large stabilizers, and will be thoroughly green throughout. There will be zero discharge into the sea in keeping with modern regulations. Other mechanical systems to be determined. SAFETY: Safety would be of utmost importance, and the vessel boasts a compliment of 16 lifeboats and 6 ship to shore tenders, with total capacity for 6,000 if necessary (life rafts not included in that figure). The vessel will also be an 5 compartment ship, with two watertight decks within the hull, maximizing her survivability in the event of a major disaster such as collision. She will be designed so that 5 of her largest watertight compartments May flood to the waterline (where her lower watertight deck is located) and the ship will not sink or capsize. Onboard computer systems would transfer water from tanks within the hull to deal with any list during an emergency situation so that all lifeboats and life rafts may be permitted to be launched in a safe manner. The liners hull will be made of specially reinforced steel and an equally reinforced aluminum superstructure (in keeping with the materials used aboard her namesake SS United States) which also includes both funnels and mast. To further save weight, Her interiors will be made of special honeycomb material. DESIGN PENDING COPYRIGHT
