Most of the the SWATH designs out there are pretty much old designs slightly modified but not radical.

Important thing about boating is either you are sea nerd who loves rock and rola or the rest of the 99% population who wants sample type of living as on land. SWATH is a good fit for the second group. However there is need for new designs. Does anyone working on it?

    Welcome to the Forum Newbeeee.

"Radical" is your operative word; go for it, design away!

Just use a deep, fast submarine and make sure to have fast wi-fi, perhaps from a towed antenna on a kite. Most of them won't even notice when the windows go dark. ;-)

@newbeeee I think that you will find that even with SWATH design, trying to come up with radical new designs is a bit like trying to re-invent the wheel.
They have been extensively developed / researched / tested over the years - and the reason why you see the SWATHs currently in existence is that they are proven to work.
@Ad Hoc of this forum is an authority on SWATHs, and has published papers on them - he would be a good person to ask as to what sort of research is currently being carried out on them.

I think thing idea was to minimize danger of gunfire from ships or planes but still go fast in rough seas.
Since a single hull will have much less surface-area drag (not to mention larger uninterrupted space), how about a Small Wetted Area Single Hull?
Main prob would be stability and any elevated super structure would need to be very lightweight but how would that handle any waves at high speed?

How about a power-cat that is extra-wave piercing, that at rest would settle so most of the entire span would rest in the water, and COULD be a full load barge type vessel, but at speed (and not overloaded) would become a cat and finally more like a SWATH. The idea would be to have a vessel with extremely wide range of load VS speed versatility.

    Not until physics change.
FWIW, SWATHs basically fall into 3 LOA sizes, a poor performing 15-17m range (some that are called SWATHs in this size are really cats), a 25-30m size, and a 60-70m size. These sizes are not arbitrary, they are based upon construction, propulsion, strength, maintenance, and environmental constraints. Additionally larger SWATHs benefit from the Law of Cubes, which normally hamper fast vessels. One additional note, because a SWATH depends on it's geometry for it's performance, fuel consumption, tankage, and ballasting is a primary design driver.

It seems you are conflating a hull form/type....with its intended design/SOR.

I'd be interested to know what the "need" is that you believe requires "new designs".

Okay, you don't like that question (but Ad Hoc does).

How about: What radical ideas would you like to see in SWATH and why?

    Newbeeee,

Don't be shy, come on, what would you like to see happen in the SWATH world to better accommodate landlubbers?
It's going to have to be automatic leveling if it's a live-aboard simulator.
    Flush toilets of course.
Or did you have something else entirely in mind?
    Car ports?
    Please do share...

I have seen news articles (sorry don't have handy now), top end luxury yacht market is designing SWATH and Planning catamaran with ballasts built in! When in motion, ballasts will be emptied making cat sail fast and in high seas / waves, fill the ballasts to make swath ie. comfortable sail for passengers.

I believe SWATH started off as radical new design which was DISCREDITED by EXPERTS at the time!

Would love to see the demonstrated performance of such design as you've described.

I will keep an eye on it. It looks very interesting idea though, besides cost :)
