I'm assuming you meant a gravity wave in water and not a wake wave, though for far field they are indistinguishable. By either period or length with depth in relation to wavelength causing waves in shallow water to "stack up".

Will read this weekend. I was primarily interested in open ocean waves but good to understand their behavior when approaching shallow water, inlets, etc. I am interested in any and all papers concerning hydrodynamics, waves, the interaction between boat hulls and waves, aerodynamics of sails and boat structures above the waterline. Thanks again.

For the interaction of waves with vessels, I recommend Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Bhattacharya. There are several pdf's on the net.
