Arctic open-water periods are projected to lengthen dramatically by 2100

Abstract

The shrinking of Arctic-wide September sea ice extent is often cited as an indicator of modern climate change; however, the timing of seasonal sea ice retreat/advance and the length of the open-water period are often more relevant to stakeholders working at regional and local scales. Here we highlight changes in regional open-water periods at multiple warming thresholds. We show that, in the latest generation of models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), the open-water period lengthens by 63 days on average with 2 °C of global warming above the 1850-1900 average, and by over 90 days in several Arctic seas. Nearly the entire Arctic, including the Transpolar Sea Route, has at least 3 months of open water per year with 3.5 °C warming, and at least 6 months with 5 °C warming. Model bias compared to satellite data suggests that even such dramatic projections may be conservative.​

Increased Transnational Sea Ice Transport Between Neighboring Arctic States in the 21st Century

The Arctic is undergoing a rapid transition toward a thinner, less extensive, more mobile sea ice cover. This affects the amount of sea ice exchanged between the exclusive economic zones of Arctic states. Here we use an Earth System Model, the Community Earth System Model, to track sea ice from where it forms to where it ultimately melts. By midcentury, the area of sea ice exchanged between the different regions of the Arctic is predicted to more than triple compared to the end of the twentieth century, with the Central Arctic joining Russia as a major ice “exporter.” At the same time, the exchange of sea ice over long distances is predicted to diminish in favor of ice exchanged between neighboring Arctic states. By midcentury, the average time required for ice to travel from one region to another is more than halved; by 2100, nearly all transports take less than a year, with little multiyear ice left in the Arctic. Sea ice provides a transport mechanism for a variety of material, including algae, dust, and a range of pollutants. The acceleration, and then disappearance, of sea ice has important implications for managing contamination in Arctic waters.

Scientists scramble to harvest ice cores as glaciers melt

• Scientists are racing to collect ice cores – along with long-frozen records they hold of climate cycles – as global warming melts glaciers and ice sheets
  
• In 2018 scientists scouted a site on the Grand Combin glacier, high on the Swiss-Italian border, and drilled a shallow test core
  
• It had well-preserved atmospheric gases and chemical evidence of past climates, and ground-penetrating radar showed a deep glacier, making these cores the oldest from Europe to date
  
• But in the two years it took for the scientists to return with a full drilling set-up, some of the information that had been trapped in the ice had vanished. Freeze-thaw cycles had created icy layers and meltwater pools throughout the glacier, rendering the core useless for basic climate science
  
• Almost all of the world’s glaciers are shrinking, according to the United Nations
  
• The pace at which glaciers are losing mass is also increasing

The implications are that a weakening Van Allen Belt will let more solar
