Whatever the ultimate design, flood stage isn't the time to run the river.

    I reckon.

In Randall's situation I wouldn't strictly use Lowe's. Mostly milled lumber from gathered trees, I think.

I agree. I would also cut it thicker. 1 and a half inches would be too weak.

And now I'm at the point where I want this barge. Well, already want it. Hardly at the point of needing...

There was a show called Ice Road Truckers. Why not drive the supplies by truck those few miles when the river is frozen?

    Hoyt,

When rivers freeze up here, they still flow under the ice.
The ice remains in chunks, you could never drive on it.
It's dangerous enough to try walking on it.

Lakes, on the other hand, are a whole other matter.
They freeze much more solidly, depending on the amount of current underneath.

Greetings from the Great White North!

And the Pacific Ocean certainly doesn't freeze here, whatever may happen in Alaska

It's a pretty rare event and limited to harbours around here.

You could at least buy a Lumber Jacket with fur collar and cuffs to look the part

In Canada, Lowe's is crap. A pitiful second after Home Depot.

But still. I want a barge that can transport a loaded pickup truck short distances in sheltered waters. How small could that be, and not be foolhardy?
