Climate change may lead to more landfalling tropical cyclones in China
    • Scientists use global climate models to simulate future changes in temperature, precipitation, etc.
    • Due to their coarse resolutions, many models cannot properly simulate small-scale weather and climate systems like Tropical Cyclones (TCs)
    • A study out of the Chinese Academy of Sciences uses regional climate models rather than global climate models to better simulate TC activity through the rest of the century.
    • There models suggested that by the end of the 21st century, the annual mean frequency of TC genesis and occurrence frequency is projected to increase by 16% and 10%, respectively
    • Their projections indicated more TC landfalls within most coastal provinces of China, with an increase of ~18% over the whole Chinese territory
The study was published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences.

The end of the 21st century? Who will be held accountable for THAT failed prediction? Maybe we should set up an agency to hold descendants of clairvoyant scientists responsible for publishing wrong predictions?
I predict 2033 will be the end of time. I hope to be here to witness it.

Are you volunteering to be "held accountable" for any of the many failed Christian predictions? Didn't think so. ;)

Arctic Coastal Sea Ice Thinning Twice As Fast As Thought
    • Monitoring the area of sea ice is relatively straightforward using images from satellites
    • Calculating the volume of sea ice is more difficult
    • ESA’s CryoSat altimeter returns readings of ice height by timing how long it takes for radar waves to bounce back to the satellite from the ice surface
    • However, these measurements can be distorted by the weight of overlying snow pushing it down into the ocean water
    • A new computer model calculates snow depth and density using inputs such as air temperature, snowfall and ice motion to track how much snow accumulates on sea ice
    • They concluded that sea ice in key Arctic coastal regions is thinning at a rate of 70–100% faster than previously thought
The paper was published in The Cryosphere

I neither made any of those predictions, nor descended from those who did. No connection with me. I'm responsible for my own prediction only. Don't even share the same views with those others. Those were almost exclusively predicted by millennialists. A millennialist is someone who believes Christ is returning to set up a thousand year long reign on earth. Same mistake the Jews made, expecting an earthly king as the messiah. Christ established His kingdom on earth on Pentecost soon after His death and resurrection.. His kingdom is called the church. Already here. And I don't mean Constantine's Holy Roman Empire catholic church. A political expedient at the time. Catholicism began with the First Council of Nicaea in 325 organized by Constantine. Christ's church was already nearly, omly eight years shy of three centuries old in 325. Or maybe less, if Crist was born 4 BC., then He died 29 AD at age 33.

An astronomical fact, Jupiter and Venus in close conjunction, touching, and extraordinarily bright went into retrograde motion, meaning stopped, directly above Bethlehem December 25th 2 BC. .Such a close conjunction of Jupiter and Venus has not occurred since.
Constantine declared formally celebrating Christmas on December 25 in 336. Somebody knew in advance? The wise men presented gifts to the toddler Jesus then. They were able to use celestial navigation to determine the exact house the "Star" stopped over. It's called by navigators the geographical position of a heavenly body. Navigation by stars was invented as early as 3000 BC. The original language of the scriptures called Jesus a toddler, not a babe in swaddling clothes. Maybe he returns 2029? I can't predict when exactly, but soon! Genesis makes the prediction, I just pointed it out. I warn I suspect He is pissed off!

Interesting. maybe meaningless. The sky is a big clock. That's true.

The circumstances of this event were computed using the DE430 planetary ephemeris published by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

This event was automatically generated by searching the ephemeris for planetary alignments which are of interest to amateur astronomers, and the text above was generated based on an estimate of your location.

I'm neither an astronomer nor an astrologer, but this seems very unlikely for two reasons.

First, I take "directly above" to mean at the zenith. I think that the planets are (mostly) on the ecliptic, which means that the only places on Earth that they can be "directly above" are those areas of Earth that are between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. Since Bethlehem is well outside the Tropics I doubt that any planet can be "directly above" it at any time.

Second, since Earth is constantly rotating, any star or planet will be at the zenith position over any particular location on Earth for only a split second (except at the poles). So I don't understand how any celestial body can be said to have "stopped" over any location on Earth. Celestial bodies don't "stop" because Earth does not "stop."

There are other things that I could question, but I think I'll stop for now. This all seems like hokum for the gullible to me.

31.7054° N, 35.2024° E is the coordinates of Bethlehem. Tropic of Cancer lies 23.4394 degrees) north of the Equator. Bethlehem is roughly seven degrees farther north. You are also correct in you are no astronomer.

"Jupiter and Venus in close conjunction, touching, and extraordinarily bright went into retrograde motion, meaning stopped,"

"You could have saved yourself some embarrassment if you looked up retrograde motion of planets first. That is why planet means, wandering star. Not only do they appear to stop, but reverse their direction, go backwards a few days or months, stop again and resume regular course. The motion is relative to us on earth's surface. Occupants of a car doing 70 passing a car doing 60 observe the slower car going backwards relative to them.

The three Magi, and we derive the words magic and magician from magi, were probably astrologers constantly seeking signs and portents in the sky. Something attracted them to come to Jerusalem asking where the new king is. Herod's court and wise men knew nothing about it. Astrology was forbidden to the Jews. Herod's advisors told him, the messiah was prophesied to be born in Bethlehem a few miles to the south and Herod sent the Magi there with a request he be informed what they found. When they didn't report back, he ordered all boys two years old and less killed..Apparently, the magi had been observing strange phenomenon for at least two years to inspire killing two year olds. The magi saw the star stopped over Bethlehem and were pleased to see it and went to the correct house. You assumed it needed to be in the zenith. Doesn't sound like zenith. Sounds like azimuth...I understand how "directly over" would seem to be zenith. My pun on geographical position of a "Heavenly Body" may have confused you as to my meaning.

Did this event occur? Yes, you can check on astronomy sites . The sky is a big clock, and with computers we can wind the clock backwards. Or forwards. Real science you can replicate and check. Not just take anyone's word for it. Taking speculation at face value with no way to verify is gullible. AGW appeals to the gullible.

And since Bethlehem lies outside the tropics none of the planets will ever be directly overhead (at zenith).
I understand what retrograde means. However, the motion they are referring to is the apparent motion of, say, a planet against the background of all the stars. It does not mean that a planet can (apparently) stop its motion over some specific location on Earth and appear to hover there. All the stars and planets sweep across the sky at a rate of 360 degrees per 24 hours (more or less) -- retrograde or no retrograde.

Here's another link that shows an animation of retrograde planetary motion.

    Apparent retrograde motion

I am well aware of the Biblical story. However I still assert that if any bright object hovered over Bethlehem 2,000 years ago, it didn't have anything to do with the natural orbit of the planets. I'll take your word that "Jupiter and Venus were in close conjunction directly above ...Bethlehem December 25th 2 BC," but it certainly can't be said that they were "directly above Bethlehem" then. They weren't "directly above" anywhere on Earth!

For what it's worth, it is not at all certain that Jesus was born Dec 25, 2BC.

    Date of birth of Jesus

Satellite Observations Show Marine Clouds Amplify Global Warming
    • A long-standing climate change uncertainty is how clouds affect global warming and cooling
    • Will marine clouds increase and cause cooling by shading?
    • The study finds that this cooling effect will be modestly reduced as the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere increases
    • And they found that low clouds will likely amplify global warming
    • They also calculated that climate sensitivity is likely (two-thirds chance) between 2.4 and 3.6 °C (4.3 and 6.5 °F), a lower and narrower range than in previous estimates.
The research appears in Nature Climate Change

It's water vapor that is supposedly a "greenhouse" gas, clouds have already been discussed, extensively on this site, as reflective of incoming radiation to keep the solar energy out.

There seems to be a contradiction here.

You don't read well, I said Jesus was a toddler when the magi viited December 25th 2 BC. I said Constantine declared December 25 as Christmas three centuries later. I doubt Constantine knew about the date of the magi visit. Jesus was probably born in spring or summer because the shepherds tended the flocks on pasture. No grass in winter.

The majesty of the December 25th Magi visit is the coincidence. Is it coincidene? Or is God winking cluing us, He sees us celebrating Dec 25th in the future? :D

Go outside and look at the stars some night. They aren't streaking across the sky like time-lapsed streams of traffic on highways. To the naked eye they look pretty stationary. A planets motion or lack of it would be noticeable only to a trained observer with an instrument to measure with. Magi were experts in observing the sky with precision, seems obvious. What instrument they had, I DON'T KNOW. A small bow with multiple knots in the bowstring and attached plumb bob can measure rough altitudes. They could devise something more precise II think.

Are you feeling desperate not to believe?
