New study ties solar variability to the onset of decadal La Nina events
    • Researchers have long tried to find correlations between the sun's energy cycles and Earth's weather patterns
    • The waxing and waning of the number of sunspots takes place over approximately 11-year cycles, but these cycles do not have distinct beginnings and endings
    • However, the more precise 22-year "clock" for solar activity derived from the Sun's magnetic polarity cycle is very distinct
    • Magnetic bands migrate towards each other from the Sun's poles and terminate each other when they meet at the equator
    • Researchers found that terminator events coincide with a flip from El Nino (warmer sea surface temperatures) to La Nina (cooler sea surface temperatures)
    • The paper does not explain what physical connection between the Sun and Earth could be responsible for the correlation
The research was published in Earth and Space Science

More people die in winter than summer, but climate change may see this reverse
    • Winter death rates generally exceed those in summer months because infectious diseases, like influenza, tend to circulate more in winter
    • Summer heat stress can exacerbate chronic health conditions including heart disease and kidney disease, particularly for older adults
    • Comparing deaths in the hottest summers with the coldest winters, particularly warm years increase the likelihood of seasonal mortality ratios approaching 1 to 1 (meaning equal deaths in summer and winter)
    • Between 1968 and 2018 Australia has seen relatively more deaths in summer months and relatively fewer deaths in winter months
    • During that time annual average temperatures increased by more than 1°C in Australia
The study was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health

I grew up in central Florida without air conditioning. Fought in Vietnam without air conditioning. Living in Mexico now without air conditioning. Hot weather is a problem only for wimps and wooses.

Agree. No a/c in our public schools in central Florida then either.

Apparently you judge everyone else by your current health and situation. Nice guy -- not!

And do you proudly not use A/C while living in Florida? So who is the "wimp and woose?"

Grew up with a window fan. Glad to have it. Now have a/c. Glad to have it too. No idea how many units of blood skeeters took off me but it was a lot.

I started jogging a mile a day the Summer out of second grade, Clearwater, Fl. The Old Man decided to take up jogging and dragged his three sons along with him. After a year of that, I was the one holding the stopwatch because I finished first. My older brother put up such a stink, he didn't have to go after that first year. My younger brother dropped out soon after.
I was still jogging when we moved aboard in 1974 at age eleven. We lived at Clearwater Marina for over three years with electric fans only after the second year aboard. Our bunks were vinyl. Talk about cruel and unusual, falling asleep in a pool of your sweat, in the Summer months.

When my brothers weren't around, I'd sometimes take the box fan and prop it at one end of my bunk, wrap the bed sheet around it and tuck the edges under me so the fan filled it like a cotton balloon with me in the middle. All that circulating air just for me.

At the time, we never gave it a second thought. That's just how life on a boat was. AC was for houses and expensive cars.

Maybe it won't be long before the wimps and wooses secumb and we achieve herd immunity to the heat.

Let's not concern ourselves with friends and family who can't cut it.
    ; )

That statement is nothing but inflammatory. What you're saying is that "Production" is fueling "Climate Catastrophe" you hold up "Rich People" as being particularly villainous. Anyone who owns the means of production, whether it is an individual capitalist, a socialist government or the people of a communist nation could be pointed to for blame. We could also blame the consumer who provides the "demand" that makes "production" so profitable. Without that market, production wouldn't happen. The capitalists wouldn't bother, the governments wouldn't bother and the people wouldn't bother. So really, it's people who are to blame, not the individuals who happen to position themselves the most advantageously.

That just sounds like jealousy talking and reduces the impact of the AGW argument.

Really ImaginaryNumber, you should have posted a trigger warning before posting a statement of fact.

Please, think of the children rich and powerful!

Hoyte, I hope you got your vaccination. It isn't just about protecting yourself, but about your friends and your family.

My eightyfive year old father with a heart condition, a past stroke and is undergoing treatment for Multiple Myeloma, has no immune system, but still has plenty to contribute to the growth and development of both me and my children, is very vulnerable to even the common cold. If I caught Covid, I'd expect it to be fairly mild for me, but I'd most certainly pass it around to the rest of my family if I didn't wear a mask and keep my distance. It would definitely kill my father. It would probably kill my mother too and my brothers wife recently had a heart attack, so that makes her particularly vulnerable also.

Do everyone around you a huge favor and be sure to get vaccinated. It is safe and there is no chip. Chip tracking is old technology and unnecessary. Our phones and Alexa do it all. What they miss, credit card activity, satellite surveillance and Internet connected cctv fills in for the rest. No chip needed.
