Test your design thoroughly; first on a lake with a light breeze, and eventually in the rough ocean. At least you will be able to recover the boat when the control system doesn't work as expected.

I looked at the boats you mentioned and I see what you mean. I also took a look at the only other boat with a similar sail setup and it appears close-hauled, and you can clearly see it tacking downwind. Thank you for explaining the differences in such detail I really appreciate it. I'm realizing how much I have to learn!

Thank you for the advice and book recommendations I'll give those a read :) Started with Principles of yacht design yesterday and I see why it's recommended so much. I appreciate the info on model building and software I'll look into that further too. I'm quite excited for when I start building!

    Hi @trackie2 and welcome!

This forum is a good start. And also, (sorry for the auto-promotion) Navalapp (https://navalapp.com) could be a good starting point for you.

At Navalapp, we periodically publish articles (Articles https://navalapp.com/articles/) and online courses (Sailing Yacht Design – 1 https://navalapp.com/courses/sailing-yacht-design-1/) about sailing, sailing craft, sailing craft design, and related fields. We also make available online calculation tools (https://navalapp.com/calculations/) related to the aero and hydrodynamics of sailing.

Navalapp is too an online Community of passionate fellows (https://navalapp.com/community/). Currently, more than 800. The only requirements to join are an unrestricted desire to learn, share your knowledge, and constructively support others in their journey.

We have the online course called Sailing Yacht Design – 1 (https://navalapp.com/courses/sailing-yacht-design-1/) where the instructors are Naval Architects and University Lecturers on Sailing Yacht Design and Small craft. It is meant to be an introductory course, and it covers the main aspects of the design of sailing yachts: theoretical fundamentals, yacht modeling, hull and appendage modeling and resistance, sail forces calculation, stability issues, and velocity prediction programs.

During the course, the instructors guide you through the design of a new yacht from the ground up, showing their methodology, the software they use, and explaining the design decisions and trade-offs made.

To follow the course, it is not necessary to have any prior knowledge of the design of sailing yachts. However, a technical or engineering background will help you out during the journey.

You can see a teaser of the course here:

I hope this information can be of some help!

I checked Navalapp.com and I have one recommendation. Add physical address to about and or contact pages. I assume you are a real business entity (or owned by one) in Finland. Be open about it - it will give so much credibility these days.

One of the 1st things I check on a web store of any kind.

    Hi Kerosene,

Yes, Navalapp is a real business entity owned by one (me) in Finland.

There is no secret about the VAT number or address. Both are publicly known. In fact, Navalapp address is clearly specified on the website on the "Site Terms" page. But I understand that might not be easy to find. I will consider it to add it to another easier-to-find location. Thanks for the hint!
