why are you getting into useless polemics? If you can have fun with wisecracks about Mars, why can't I?

And I still offered you a real response to the question.

All my jig components were cnc cut jist like these.

I am rather curious if he had some software assistance or if he had to do the entire setup manually. Perhaps there is some type of autocad modeling that allows a shape to get its inverse and then you develop the frames to fit. I am curious as well.

I didn't say that, but it's common too.

Direct to mold tooling (no plug, just building a mold) has been done since the industry first started. I was doing it 40 years ago and it wasn't new or unusual then.

Using MDF or other forms of wood started as soon as the materials became available.

I sell sealers designed for MDF and similar surfaces to help stabilize and strengthen them.

Two of my customers just built this type of tooling. One built a custom 65' cat mold and they hope to get at least three hulls out of it. This is what they do with almost every custom build. Another just built a 34' power cat, I don't know how the de-molding went on the first hull yet.

I get calls almost every week from various customers building prototypes that need quick tooling to test designs. This is a low cost and quick way to build these items for display or testing.

Can you tell in more detail about this? Why not epoxy?

Epoxy chemistry doesn't accept thinners well, they can drastically reduce the physical properties and inhibit the cure even at very low levels. Plus they are expensive and more difficult to work with. Going with the cheapest material to build the shape, then an expensive coating doesn't normally fit into the plan.

MDF is/was considered a very low quality and dirt cheap tool building material. The low cost aspect has changed recently, but the low quality didn't.

MDF, or most any wood product, will change shape due to temperature and humidity fluctuations, MDF is by far the most affected though.

Anytime you cut MDF you open it up to absorbing moisture even more, so the shape can easily change overnight.

Sealers are used to help prevent moisture uptake and retain the shape. The sealers are water thin and absorbed quickly.

Not everyone uses a sealer, it just depends on the desired outcome. Some just go straight to one of our primers, It doesn't work as well, but still works. You can polish the primer or apply a high gloss top coat, it all depends on your goal.

I take it you mean that if I wanted to live on Mars I might be able to.But I don't want to live there. You might and you don't know how to get there.

Yes, but the thing is I want to know how and I want to try it.

It appears you are talking about Musk, be assured Musk won't be funding any such escapade, it being so impossibly expensive that it would be politically unsaleable. I'm sure I'm not the only one that can see that, robotic landers are one thing, live people going there is a giant leap beyond that. And I dare say advances in robotics will be that great in coming years, they will outperform humans in just about any task likely to be called for in exploring Mars. Tens of Trillions won't be wasted on showcase space jaunts involving human passengers, anytime soon.

Since this morphed into a Mars and space travel thread, I supply products that are used by a company that built parts for the SpaceX Crew Dragon.

You may have seen the components in the cockpit if you watched while it was on the way to the Space Station.

Any general purpose 3D CAD modeling software suitable for designing a hull (Rhino is one example) can be used to design a female mold.
