Hickman style hull any good for low powered outboard Houseboat?

Now I'm dying to know how fast I can move my boat with just 25hp.

Bluebell, your houseboat is a reasonable approximation. How fast, at a guess?

 

Jon boats handle chop well. They are a modified scow type hull. Pontoons are way more expensive and complicated.

The problem with pontoons is vertical height goes up sharply, but he says he doesn't want a barge, I seem to recall. I think I would go with the barge, which isn't far removed from a jon boat.

 

And if he's going with the barge, the sea sled is better.

 

The sled is inferior unless he wants speed, and is powering accordingly, he needs a barge with a raked entry so it doesn't throw water all over the houseboat, and a bottom that does not end abruptly in a submerged transom, acting as a brake/

 

Jon boats have a raked bow and the better ones with a bit of a vee.

 

You don't want transom drag, he has no ambitions for speed.

 

Ever seen a Jon boat?

 

If he is happy with 5-6 knots, submerged transoms are a handicap.

 

Gonzo, could a jon boat really be made the size the op is looking for?

 

There are commercially built, but usually for higher speeds. For example, Munson makes them. Old style landing craft hulls are probably close to what he needs.

 

I've been looking at low speed displacement craft. Particularly barges. The radiused transition from the bottom to the transom is a distinctive feature. Might be possible to add a small sharp edge, right at the beginning of curvature, to allow flow to separate when approaching planing speeds, but small enough that the flow at very low speeds is mostly undisturbed.
