I've seen some great fishing machines made out of offshore racing boats. It just depends what you need. I'm not a big fan of CC boats but that's weather related - it's cold here.

But if you want to reach spots fast, obviously there's nothing better. Here we run sixty miles offshore pretty often; I've seen a few converted offshore needles that would run it at blistering speed, fill up with tuna, and run back. Impressive.

But they do roll a bit, being narrow and with a steep deadrise. The long ones seem to do a good fast troll, though. Although I admit I don't quite have the bank account to feed a boat in the 1-2,000 HP range, myself.

But I have definitely seen it done, by guys who knew what they wanted, and got it.

Got any photos? Think it's a bit of a long shot and after what Mr Efficiency has pointed out it might be a bit to much of a compromise for what I'm after.

All the ones I looked at were in the 1000hp range but think the overall project would be to costly.

I've started doing research into the bertram 25/caribbean 26 which is a much newer hull with fuel injected 4.3L mercruisers and have change for fuel and will be a lot better on fuel than a cigarette and stable on anchor.

Thanks for all the information and feedback, I really appreciate everyone's opinions/experiences on this.

I was actually thinking the Bertram/Caribbean 25/26 would be a good choice, were it not for the 10' width limiting trailering ability. If a short trip to the ramp, daylight permit will cover it.

Yes you are right there but I found this arvo that you can get an exemption for light vehicle oversize to 3.3m using QLD TMR form F4880 as long as trailer/load doesnt exceed 12.5m length.
See attached screenshot from light vehicle oversize guidelines. This allows you to tow in the smaller category of regulations with larger load via exemption.

That's interesting, I will keep that in mind.

Sorry, no photos remaining, that all happened some 50 years back, and even though the hull bottom was all that remained of the original Cigarette boat, there were legal repercussions, as we molded the new hull with an eye towards production.
It had quite a lot more freeboard and a high bow, and did the job nicely with a pair of V-8 stern drives.
