You can weld directly over the primer, but post welding requires touching up. Because the primer would not contaminate owing to the heat of the welding.

But you'll need to check the influence on the lightship displacement.

I had a client who wanted his steel dutch barge converted into aluminium.
This was fine.. but after running the numbers she floated at a much less draft, which resulted in carrying solid ballast to ensure the existing propulsion set up worked as designed.

Thus using ally is fine, but just ensure you understand the effects of doing so.

 

True, but it won't be his problem, he is buying a stock design, the designers have already done the conversions (at least for their more popular designs). He just has to order the correct version.

For the OP:
When you are shopping for material also ask the cutting service supplier for a quote with their own material. The comparison base should be the price after cutting, and a place that buys truckloads a month has different discounts, so it's entirely possible that the final price for material+transport+cutting is lower if bought as a package from the same place.

I am very convinced on building a steel boat ( it has been my dream for more than 15 years). I dont doubt that aluminium has a few advantages.

Any suggestion in terms of designer and plans?

I already decided not to go with Roberts, I like some Dix designs as well as Van de Stadt, but anybody has something interesting to look at in the 45-55ft range?

I am ordering study plans but open for proposals to compare.

How difficult is to convert the plans into cutting files?

At my company we work with wooden CNC, and we normally vectorize shapes from drawings, anybody has done something similar?

Or the only way is to also purchase the cutting files?

When the ship then is ready for painting, do you just spray the final coats over the shop prime, or sandblast and apply the paint manufacturers primer to their specs?

They mention that the cost of plans for these designs is 5,800 Euros, but I would assume that you get the full works cutting files included for this price?

 

We consult with the paint supplier to best method, as it depends upon the type of paint and the primer.

Don't under estimate the effort level for sandblasting and paint. If you can build inside and get wheel abraded steel go with that !
