    I have read that the Oceanic Lateen is also the Crab Claw. I have not seen any reference to a need for curved spars. I'm happy to go with the consensus, but I haven't come across one yet.

    If you Google Crab Claw rig, you get a lot of stuff that goes well past the rig that looks like the crab claw that gave it its name.

    I always understood that the crab claw had curved spars, a convex leech and the spars were close to vertical. The lateen sails have the upper spar close to 45 degrees and the lower spar or sail foot close to horizontal.

    220square footer, hook and looped to two bendy carbon and thin 6061 spars; "goes" but not on ice...MN rig.

    Very interesting and well researched paper. The range of shapes and spar types is much larger than I thought.

    What do you mean, vindicated on what? The paper covers crab claw, lateen and sprits.

    What are you talking about? The paper compares different types of traditional rigs from the pacific. There is no comparison to any european rig.

    Was not meaning the read implies the two sentences were referencing same publication...my duh! First is to author, second is that I think gaff (which I use) is simple and bows excepted, ideally so.

    I should have added: I possess one (very dusty) Marchaj book and learned here his ideas were not spelled out by (his) practical efforts. C'est la vie, changes nada!

    Will, funny how some things work to alter minds....After some success, I recall that I did entertain the idea of using a lateen plan instead of the gaff plan, but never liked the idea of having a spar against stubby mast, and, am now wondering maybe the lateen is it...

    Gonzo, You gets a thanks from me...after years, I am re-reading his (Marchaj) book.

    Fun...and I still thimk me rig is a gaffer...but maybe not.
