Mass lake drainage in Alaskan tundra another sign of climate change
    • Between 2017 and 2018, 192 lakes in northwest Alaska lost at least a quarter of their area as the permafrost that held them melted
    • That’s more than 10 times the usual rate of change and twice the drainage of the previously worst year, 2005-06
    • Warm temperatures and heavy precipitation is consistent with what climate change models predict across the Arctic

Temperate insects as vulnerable to climate change as tropical species
    • Tropical insects are severely threatened by climate change since they already live very close to their optimal temperature and "critical thermal maximum."
    • It has been assumed that insects in temperate regions would cope well with or even benefit from a warmer climate
    • However, earlier models failed to take into account the fact that insects in temperate habitats are inactive for much of the year
    • It was found that during the time of the year when temperate insects are active, current temperatures are close to the insects' optimal and critical maximum
The study was published in Nature.

Intemperate insects are prone to bite.

Huh? Its not like the USA isnt contributing, especially red meat for hamburgers
"U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Brazil totaled $3.3 billion in 2019, our 8th largest supplier of agricultural imports. Leading categories include: unroasted coffee ($1.0 billion), fruit & vegetable juices ($378 million), red meats, prepared or preserved ($326 million), tobacco ($221 million), and essential oils ($122 million). So, is it being suggested that agriculture is a problem and people should stop demanding food be grown for them? They either grow it for themselves or they get others to grow it for them. Either way, a set amount gets grown. A farmer either agrees to grow more than he/she needs and sells the extra to those who can't grow it or those people start growing their own food. I don't see a net gain or loss either way.

If our own over population is the problem, nature has that covered. Limited resources forces population limits. You can't cheat and you can't escape.

Is the ocean broken? No, it is just in the process of breaking us. It is constantly enforcing the rules. The "Law of Nature".

    No, not correct.

Yes, but maybe an intelligent species can self-limit growth and resource use. Maybe? Time will tell.

Why we need policies to reduce meat consumption now
    • The food system is responsible for about 30 percent of greenhouse gas emissions
    • These emissions are expected to rise rapidly as people around the world become more affluent and consume more meat and dairy products
    • Even if all non-food greenhouse gas emissions were cut off today, food systems emissions would cause us to cross the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius temperature rise around the middle of the century
The chart below shows the effect of five key emissions reduction measures in the food system.

Keep in mind that the units being compared are kg or mass.

1 unit of beef supplies 18 times the calories of 1 unit of lettuce. Beef provides about 3 times the calories of corn. Beans, on the other hand, have more calories than lean beef, but then we have methane to deal with and that is a real stinker.

Also note that beef has 2800 calories per kilogram, while nuts have 5500-6500 calories per kilogram but only 1/60 the carbon footprint.

There is also evidence the eating red meat is not best for optimal health.

What’s the beef with red meat? | Harvard University
Dr. Hu says that an accumulated body of evidence shows a clear link between high intake of red and processed meats and a higher risk for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and premature death. "The evidence is consistent across different studies," he says.

But the key word here is "high." Dr. Hu points out that the exact amounts for safely consuming red meat are open to debate.

"The evidence shows that people with a relatively low intake have lower health risks," he says. "A general recommendation is that people should stick to no more than two to three servings per week."

Bring on the howls of anguish...

A Race Against Time to Rescue a Reef From Climate Change
    • The Nature Conservancy asked a profound question: Could you design an insurance policy for a coral reef?
    • Swiss Re developed a policy that could be purchased by those who benefit from a particular reef
    • Payouts would occur if hurricane winds speeds exceeded 100 knots
    • The first payout, of $850,000, occurred for a reef protecting Cancun after being hit by hurricane Delta
    • Rescuers righted over-turned corals and glued broken coral fragments to stable reefs
    • It is hoped that similar policies will be used world-wide to protect reefs, mangroves, salt marshes and other natural storm barriers

I love it, IN. What a great way to stimulate jobs, develop an under developed resource and provide a new opportunity to an industry that is in need of new ideas.
