Interesting. I wonder if there is a downside in the heavy heavy stuff.

It isn't a new idea, that cat with a suspension, but one senses that hydrofoils are the thing that will eventually be the solution to optimizing ride.

Maybe nice as long as they can maintain flying speed, but everybody has to slow down sometime, and it may be in busy water. The suspended cat works (within its limits) at all speeds.

What are the limitations on foils, in terms of wave height and frequency? If a foil boat jumps a wave (or a lot of them), are the foils robust enough to survive the pounding?

A possible failing of the suspension craft: I noticed that the suspension kept the cabin level at all times, but couldn't always mitigate vertical acceleration, which I've read was the main cause of sea-sickness.

Further, I'm curious about the suspension-cat's failure mode; will it work passively to some extent? I'd think the pneumatics could be set up that way.

That's certainly been my experience over time. But hydrofoil craft still have an operational limit dictated by sea state and the problem with that limit is that it's a rather abrupt "wall", whereas with more conventional vessels, the operational limits are seen and felt in a more gradual manner most of the time...the craft can be slowed and heading changed.

Did I say it was a new idea. Do.you have a link to the other suspension cats. If hydrofoils are the future where have they all gone. There used to be plenty of hydro ferrys but not anymore.

The 90s passenger vessel designs always struggled to be economically viable, in spite of their often amazing performance. The Boeing designs, in particular, were very expensive to build and operate. But hydrofoils are "not dead yet"...there are several projects underway to develop "green" ferry designs for short-run commuter application. There are also a number of military/naval projects using hydrofoil craft.
Interestingly, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the International Hydrofoil Society..an organization that I've been a member of for about 33 of those 50. ;-)

Meh, small scale and old hat. It is a truism that every decade or so people give old technology some new paint and polish and trot it out as new. See the Ugo Conti/Jim Antrim 2005's 100 ft LoA PROTEUS WAV-M.

I think it is obvious from foiling sail boats, that there is plenty of potential left in hydrofoil power craft, the most obvious disadvantage is the lack of a "clean" uncluttered exterior, it is like taking the clothes hoist with you when you go on holiday. A completely foiling power boat is more difficult than a sailing one, as the drive has to be in the water, so gaining height above the water, to clear waves, is impossible without a complex retractable drive and foils, or even a small hydrofoil would be drawing a couple of metres of water when stopped. Hence such things as the Boeing Jetfoil, where the drive is above water.

You win mate. I will not participate in the forum any more. That will save you shooting down every post I submit.

You seem, erroneously, Brendan, to imagine you are the subject matter of threads. Paranoid reactions from you that every post I make, is a rebuttal of something you said, is something I have no control over. My last post had little or nothing to do with your posts. My first post was actually agreeing with basically what your posted picture implied, that the idea of the cat with the "suspension", was not a new idea ! You need a holiday !

You're the expert, the hydrofoil boat would be the norm if it ticked all boxes, but it ticks some very well.

SWATH is another way as well, and I think there's still one operated in Hawaii. Which one of these 3 Technologies do best with a roll?
