Killer whales launch ‘orchestrated’ attacks on sailing boats

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it does seem to be unusual.

 

When I read the article this morning, my first thought was, 'Sven was lucky he's in the Azores and not Spain. ' but then there's that report of aggressive killer whales off the Azores too.

Is it just sail boats, the deep keels, or have other boats been targeted? I was wondering if a member of their pod got hit by a sailboat keel and they are taking their anger out on all sailboats.

Killer whales also have a strong sense of play. They may be treating the boats like sport.

For an interesting read google old tom and the orcas of eden nsw. A pod of orcas worked with whalers for 100 years. The orcas would herd migrating baleen whales into two fold bay then tail slap the water outside the whalers cottages to let them know they were there.

 

Sure, but I only said that I have not seen the news, I have not said that it has not been broadcast on any Spanish TV channel. I have already recognized in a previous post that yes, some Spanish media had issued the news. In any case, qualifying what happened as an "attack" seems to me somewhat exaggerated and to say that the killer whales have attacked fishing boats and crew members seems to me not to be correct at all. After analyzing what once went unnoticed for me, it seems to me that the news, transmitted in this way, could be classified as fake news

Fake news is largely a coined term. Sure, you can have tabloid media, but generally speaking, politicians use the word fake news to discredit honest coverage.

The killer whales going after boats ought to have some sort of non-lethal remedy. I wonder out loud if they would indeed be annoyed by certain sounds or triggered to aggression or triggered away.

Perhaps they have confused the boat as an invader if it bumps them first? Since they pod, it might seem like an attack whilst they believe they are defending.

 

I believe orca are way too smart to make that mistake. I'm certain they know a boat is not alive, but the land creatures that ride on them are. In the right environment, their intelligence rivals humans.

I spent three years as a whale watching guide and never once did orcas even
touch my boat despite seeing them six days a week, multiple times a day,
sometimes in extremely close quarters (by their choice).
