I think that is one of the hardest things to make "inventors" understand. Different does not mean better. However, more often than not, their argument in favor of the invention is that a worldwide conspiracy is keeping new technology hidden.

It seems pretty simple to me, good ideas sell themselves. By demonstrated performance. Playing the " I am being stymied by vested interests" card, is usually a lame excuse.

The about 1,000 years old "invention" of the overbalanced wheel perpetual motion machine and later works on it were posted on the Random Picture Thread in post #8820 and #8827, they must have thought of a worldwide conspiracy so that these not succeeded.

Over the years I have encountered a few who subscribed to the "oil companies are hiding the secret that would allow an engine to run on water" conspiracy theory. They aren't paranoid, they just think everyone's out to get them ! :)

Any invention in particular which inspired this thread?

Sven Yrvind might be an example, the last two decades he designed and built 5 boats in a row that didn't work, but keeps believing in his development of them, and luckily for his followers he shares his endeavours with the world.

See his website and the threads Yrvind and Why I'm Following Sven Yrvind.

Maybe too many. I just got an email demanding my public apology from stating that boats can't sail directly into the wind. This member claims he has a boat that sails directly into the wind, but apparently it is a secret and won't be shown to the uninitiated.

Wind turbine powered boats can sail directly into the wind, just like the sole wind powered vehicles that drive straight against the wind.

Below's a copy pasted example from the Random Picture Thread post #8823:

See eg. DUWFTTW ¹ (Directly UpWind Faster Than The Wind)

¹ For good search results, don't allow your search engine to change the abbreviation to the same as linked on the bottom of this post.

‘‘ This is a wind powered vehicle that goes directly into the wind at more than 2 × wind speed. This video was taken on 16 June 2012 at the New Jerusalem airstrip in Northern California. The vehicle was originally designed and built to go directly downwind faster than the wind ², and set a world record by doing so on 2 July 2010, when it went 2.8 × wind-speed directly downwind. The data from one of the runs on this video will be submitted to the North American Land Sailing Association for consideration for a direct upwind record. The vehicle is called the "Blackbird" ’’

    BlueBell . . . _ _ _ . . . _ _ _

Your opening sentence speaks volumes if you think you can "make" someone understand.
One needs to facilitate understanding, not force it.

That goes downwind, not upwind. Also, it is not a boat.

That boat is reaching, not going upwind. I still see square wheels.

A II is right, those turbine powered vehicles can go directly into the wind. However, to call that sailing is a stretch.

To demand a public apology for stating a belief (as opposed to a derogatory attack), seems a bit much. It doesn't matter if that belief is right or wrong.

You didn't look at the video well, nor read the quote there well, nor read the linked info there well.

In the post #8 video the vehicle goes Directly UpWind and even Faster Than The Wind.

Right, it's a land vehicle that proves the principle.

Post #10 is just showing some examples of wind turbine powered boats, it's not claiming any direction there, as proof of principle was already given in post #8.

From your replies I can conclude you didn't look nor read the provided info well, or are just unable to judge the form of any wheels, or you just wear your aluminum hat today so that delivered evidence doesn't get through.

I never made any comment about land vehicles.
