whats the trick to this MurphyBed/Desk mechanism?

And to keep it boat related, how would such a system do if installed in a boat instead of typical setup inside a sailboat where you convert a U-shaped sofa and table into a bed?

I'm thinking of installing a similar setup in my full size Chevy van, including MAYBE making it "stand-alone" able so I could take it out of the van and use in the house.

About 17:30 mark in this Youtube. (as far as the rest of Youtube...yikes!) I wouldn't need the springs or gas-lifts and just secure in up position with cord and hook. Mostly want the trick about how the desk stays level up or down. I'm sure I could sort it out with CAD but anyone got link to plans of something similar?

These pipe berths are triced up.

Reveille call is completed with a quick 5 note pipe, too-weeya-weeya. "Carry On"

 

Thx, Barnacle. I still can't figure out WTF is going on but haven't tied too hard either. Looks to be real project with 7 sheets of plywood and "100s of holes to drill". Website seems a bit coy with actual Blueprints/Builder's Manual and I guess I'll try "On Line Chat" on Monday. I'm guessing is a disguised Paralellagram which I might DIY in the van where space is even more premium. Idea is to have bed, big desk OR fold both out of the way to have van 90% wide open for hauling.

Those bunks look pretty comfy and AFAIK negate need for mattress and don't mind being hosed down. No reason they couldn't be made even more stow-able by few hinges or Kwit-Konnectors in the pipe frame. No reason why a taut tarp couldn't be a desk top/shelves.

I'm still wondering why you don't see more hammocks and fold up racks in yacht design where "Sleeps x#" of people seems like an important feature, but to "sleep" that many often involves making the interior otherwise unusable. Seems like something that could and should be an option with just a little built-in prep but very iffy add later trying to find Strong-Points. Only hammocks I see are little ones for storage.

 

I have a good bunk system in my van.
It isn't a Murphy system but it leaves room for storage. I actually lowered the bed because I had more storage than I needed and needed more headroom. The port panels lift off for easy access.

 

I place items into plastic trays which I can slide easily into place or offload.
This Transit Connect van holds a full size mattress.
We use foam pads 2 x 24 x 48 inches times 3 to cover the platform.

I'm in California so "gang related" body dumping most likely. Never try to move a body wrapped up in carpet etc. Its a dead(pardon pun) giveaway. Always use box or trash can to hide shape. This guy wasn't caught by "police responding to letters". Now what I'm looking for is single piece pipe-cot rack like Yobarnacle's pic. All the camping cots have legs in the middle so wouldn't work well as Murphy suspended only on ends. Overall that design looks good for few reasons. Looks like tension would be self regulating due to single cord wrapping all around.

 

Try a shipbreaker cutting up old Navy vessels. Believe thet would sell you a pile of pipe berths cheap.
Old angle iron frame bed springs, cut off springs and use frame to lace canvas to.
Farm gates, some are bent tube frames. Might need to cut down and reweld, or just make oversized berth from one.
Finally, have a muffler shop or machine shop bend one up and weld it for you.

 

I do Commercial Construction so I'll keep my eye out for sparkies using big conduit and bender-bar. But I guess 2" thick wall PVC be strong enough.

 

2" heavy schedule PVC and patio furniture webbing might do the same job.

 

No yachtie would accept pipe in their stateroom.
I have slept in a few pipe births on racing sailers. Best feature is the ability to compensate for the boat's healing.

Conduit or PVC won't be strong enough to contain a sleeping sailers when the vessel rolls off a wave.

 

Yeah, it's a matter of strength. Pipe berths...WITH LEE CLOTHS... are a fine berth in a sea way. Much better that a modern sub rack (unless you get a longitudinal rack in the torpedo room). But most people will not willingly submit themselves to that.

I remember "All Hands turn too. Up and out or Down and out! Show the Navy a leg! Sweepers man your brooms!". I guess it varies boat to boat.

 

Workday ended 1630. last task of the day, was clean up all the paint chips, rust powder, dust the days maintenance created.
