Whatever else, we just don't want someone to ever have to compromise on their boat.

It is impossible not to compromise when designing a boat. Something always has to be given up in order to get something else.

I want my boat as light as a feather but as tough as a battleship. Compromise.

If there is both a length (under 16 feet) and beam (up to 7 feet) restriction, there is no problem, that is already a very "fat" boat.

I've added a 4th render link to my above post #52.

Note at all 4 renders that the bottom of the 16' Bedard Skiff has incorporated spray rails, vs. the old Jimbo in post #34 that doesn't have them, although the aluminum version has spray rail strips added to her chines, as per the alu plans...

‘‘ . . . The ALUMINUM version features sheet welded stock incorporating a chine spray rail and rugged pipe sheer bumper. . . . ’’

See Phil's note about it in post #36: ‘‘ . . . The file bottom's benefits are well worth the extra effort of one more seam . . . ’’

Waterline Length: Glen-L Jimbo 15 ¾' Center Console Garvey Skiff post #34 - vs. - Bedard Yacht Design 16' Center Console Skiff post #52

Waterline Length Bedard Yacht Design 16 ft Skiff vs Glen-L Jimbo 15 ft 9 in Garvey Skiff.jpg

From this ± comparison it looks to me the Bedard has more waterline length than the Glen-L Jimbo, even though the Bedard has a full nose.

    P.S.

The pictures are not exact at the same scale, I've just compared the looks of how much of the bow relative to the boat's length is above the water line.

For small boats aluminium is heavier than plywood, hence the alu Jimbo has more beam and draft to keep the extra weight afloat.

Glen-L Jimbo 15 ft 9 in Center Console Garvey Skiff build in plywood or aluminum.jpg
    link 1link 2

    P.S.

    Bare hull and deck weight of the Plywood version ± 450 lbs. vs. the Aluminum version ± 575 lbs. = + 125 lbs. = + 27.8 %

If the given displacement of 890 lbs. is for the Plywood version at 6" draft, and the given draft of 7" for the Aluminum version is at the same load, then:

Plywood draft = 6" @ 890 lbs. displacement (bare hull and deck weight ± 450 lbs. + 440 lbs. total load).

Aluminum draft = 7" @ 1,015 lbs. displacement (bare hull and deck weight ± 575 lbs. + 440 lbs. total load).

yes, i see that is welded plate, they can be heavy . my 12 foot aluminium is a mass produced pressed hull. very light. most popular boat in australia. everyone has a tinny in the back yard because you can abuse them and they last for years with no care.

Yep, wooden boat . .

Northern Territory News: Leading croc expert’s warning after man’s death: crocodiles are deadly ambush predators

photo caption: ‘‘ Israeli tourist Novon Mashiah gets out of the way as a crocodile lunges at him on Yellow Waters in the Northern Territory. ’’

(here's the story about it, the pics are now gone there for me)

    Saltwater Crocodile Attacks

‘‘ The 16 foot-long saltwater crocodile came within an arm’s length of inflicting serious damage to the tourist, if not killing him. Novon Mashiah, 27, an Israeli backpacker, spotted the big crocodile during a fishing trip in the Northern Territory.

Determined to have a picture taken of himself with the crocodile, he posed while leaning out of the back of his fishing boat, pointing towards the predator.

"I began playing with it for a photo,'' Mr Mashiah said. "I was pointing at it when it suddenly jumped up at me - I didn't realise that crocs were so aggressive.''

The "saltie" – which experts believe probably approached the boat in search of a free feed of fish – propelled itself out of the water with terrifying speed. After narrowly missing its prey, it smashed into the side of the small metal boat before plunging back into the water. ’’

P.S. - in the last line ‘‘metal boat’’ it says, I'm not sure about that . . ? ?
