Need to install a new middle seat in canoe.

I got a free canoe last summer in need of repair. It is fairly long but relatively light as it is made of fiberglass. The middle seat is cracked and needs replacing as it is a structural issue.

There is a post in the middle to support it off the bottom of the canoe. The last attempt to repair it has left a mess, I will need to clean up with a grinder.

My plan is to install some cleats on both sides of the boat. Then take some either 1/2" doubled up or 3/4 inch marine grade plywood I have. and create a seat that fill this space and rests on the side cleats and middle support. I will glue into place using epoxy and fiberglass.

My question is what kind of wood should I use to create the cleats on the sides of the canoe?

Is there a better way to make this repair than I am describing?

You can simply use strips of the same marine plywood you have.

The center support may be there to support the seat but it's real purpose may be to keep the bottom of the canoe from oil canning.

Yep, that is what I saw. With the center broken the sides were unsupported and flexing badly. i built a temporary board to hold it all together over the winter. I would not use it without the center support in place, figuring it is an important part of the overall structure.
