Vessels Subject to Compulsory Pilotage

A pilot is required for:

4. VESSELS SUBJECT TO COMPULSORY PILOTAGE Subject to the exceptions in Directions 5 and 6 below, pilotage is compulsory in the London Pilotage District for the following vessels, in the following areas: (1) To the east of Sea Reach No.1 Buoy for vessels of: a) 90 metres or more in Length Overall; b) 50 metres or more in Length Overall which are: i) Specified Vessels, ii) Passenger Vessels, iii) Vessels carrying Marine Pollutants in Bulk, or iv) Vessels with an Operating Draught of 6 metres or more; or c) 50 metres or more in Length Overall and with an Operating Draught of 5 metres or more when Restricted Visibility exists within that part of the London Pilotage District to the east of Sea Reach 1 Buoy where the vessel is planning to navigate. (2) To the west of Sea Reach No.1 Buoy for vessels of: a) 80 metres or more in Length Overall; b) 50 metres or more in Length Overall which are: i) Specified Vessels, ii) Passenger Vessels, iii) Vessels carrying Marine Pollutants in Bulk, or iv) Vessels with an Operating Draught of 5 metres or more; or c) 50 metres or more in Length Overall with an Operating Draught of 4 metres or more when Restricted Visibility exists within that part of the London Pilotage District to the West of Sea Reach No. 1 Buoy where the vessel is planning to navigate. (3) To the west of the Margaretness Limit for vessels: a) of 40 metres or more in Length Overall; or b) With an Operating Draught of 4 metres or more.

Is this standard for the US, UK, Europe, Panama/Suez Canals etc?

 

It is standard in many other places too. For example in the River Plate (Rio de la Plata)

 

May I ask if this is the same standard in all these locations? Or should ine expect local variations?

I am trying to determine what is the minimum length that triggers the need for a pilot taking into account all the countries of the world? Is it 100m 300m?

 

Where I live it depends on whether its privately owned or on hire, size doesnt matter and these are boats under 45ft. If on hire you must use a pilot under certain bridges. Privately owned its up to you to hire a pilot if you want one. This is an extreme case, but i would suggest it's going to be different rules everywhere depending on the local conditions.
